1993 Mercedes 400SEL (W140) - $3500 obo

I am selling my beloved 1993 Mercedes-Benz 400SEL (long wheelbase W140 chassis) 4dr - This car stickered new for $82,160.00 (I still have the original window sticker!!). It was a one owner car until I purchased it in September of 2012. Car is equipped with a 4.2L V8, automatic, COLD A/C, power windows (all work), power locks, leather seats, sunroof, power tilt/telescope, AM-FM radio/cassette, remote entry, Michelin tires, dual airbags, ABS brakes, ALL service records since new. Very large and roomy luxury sedan. Car has also had the engine wiring harness replaced, as well as the A/C evaporator, heater core, blower motor, as well as many other parts over the years. The A/C evaporator replacement alone was $3200 a couple of years ago. Car currently has 230,000 miles, so thousands of miles of life left in it. These cars are built like tanks. It does need some minor TLC - the check engine light is on and for some reason when you use the turn signals, the radio will sometimes turn off on its own and the radio will not turn off when you turn the car off, you have to use the power button. Car has NO rust, never been smoked in, has a nice interior (has some minor wear on front seats). Paint still shines, but car has some blemishes and a few small scratches/dings. *The car also has nicer all-weather floor mats in it now.

$3500.00 obo. (I have seen prices all over the places for these cars - and I am pricing this car from what I have seen in my region. I could not find one for less than $4K, so if it is over or under priced, sorry, lol). Considering that the a/c evaporator alone is around $3200 on these cars (which was done on my car only about 3 years ago for $3200, I feel that $3200 is a good price for this car. ) I hate to sell it, but it needs to go to someone that can give it more TLC than I can afford, plus somewhere it can be garaged. It was garaged from 1993-2012, but I do not have a garage to store it in. I prefer to/need to sell (because I am also selling/trading in my '12 Honda to buy a brand new car and want to pay off a couple of bills), but I may consider trade for a nice diesel 86-87 W126 300SDL or 84-85 W123 300D or a 84-85 500SEL.

Please feel free to contact me for more info. Car is located in NE Tennessee.

I haven't even opened this case, not sure what is in it. LOL.

I drove in a W140 a few years ago, 300SD (different animal, same suspension). My lord they are lovely riding cars. I was considering this SD identical to yours. You're lucky you didn't foot the bill for that EVAP!
Whew. Take a load off Annie, like the weight says.

GLWS! Very reasonably priced.

Thanks. Yes, it is a fine car. I have drove my uncles '92 300SE. I will say this 400SEL has much more power and seems to ride a little better than his, it may be due to the longer wheelbase and added weight. Yeah, I am glad all of the high $ items have been addressed on this car. It is not without its quirks, no W140 is I do not think, lol, but at least nothing major.

I hope to find it a good home. I hope someone gets it soon before I change my mind, lol. One man wanted it for his 16 year old sons about to get their license... I didn't come right out and say it, but not sure if I would put a 16 year old kid in this car - yeah it is safe, but it is powerful. I would put my 16 year old in a 300SEL or a 300D before I would a V8 W140.

I am interested in your car but I would like to offer 2800 as I have a 300td wagon 1982 and realize what all the repairs cost. It is a nice car by what I have seen from your pics. Please respond, Tom

W140 looks great, well documented and cared for. Your pricing is pretty close to mark for someone who is right on top of it. Its tough to throw 20/30% of car value on transport. sigh.

W140

I loved my 95 s320. It drives like a tank, until It hit a deer. The deer got up and ran away. Insurance pay out $3400, and I sold it to Carmax for $1200.

*Melted - I am in Bristol TN - in the northeast corner of Tennessee. HHTOM1 - thanks for that offer. I would have to get at least $3000 for it if that sounds "doable". I need to get enough to get a replacement car as nice and reliable as this one. There is a gentlemen wanting to trade me a nice '94 4-Runner for it that he is asking $4500 for and it is well worth it, but I wanted one a little newer. At this point, still up for sale if someone comes along with the cash.

Hi guys. Yeah, I still have the car. I have not been on here in awhile, sorry I have not replied sooner. Yeah, I still have the Mercedes. I had about decided to keep her, but now that I have sold my Civic, I am in seek of a replacement car for that and looking for something more practical to drive to work. I have been driving this Mercedes daily for the past month to work, which is about 500 miles per week on top of my weekend driving. I am wanting to find something like a 90s Camry / 4-Runner / Outback or something like that. My mom wanted it, but she loves her W126 too much to let it go now. CEL still on, but car runs fine. Also the radio is going bad. I have replaced the turn signal relay and also have an extra relay for something else, as well as an extra EZL if I can find it. As mentioned, the A/C evaporator, heater core and blower motor have already been replaced (was a $3300 repair) and the car has ice cold A/C. Also the engine harness was replaced around 2009-10. The car had the valve covers replaced in 2010-11 (over $300), but I think one may still be leaking just a bit. I think perhaps the bolts need to be snugged back down. Also, the interior pics were last summer - the car now has nice all-weather floor mats. Unfortunately the pics do not show the paint inperfections. It does have a couple of scratches, dings and some hazing on the paint on a couple of areas, but most importantly, the paint is original, the car has never been wrecked and the car is 100% rust free. The car is not showroom by any means, but clearly has not seen abuse and was garaged for a number of years. There is some wear on the front seats, the rear seat is like new as is the carpeting, door panels, etc. The door panels and dash pad still have soft padding and obviously not seen years of sun. One of the front tires needs to be balanced, it has a shimmy in the wheel at 55-60 mph, smooth as silk at 60+ mph. May soon need brake pads on the front.

Here are more pics I took on Saturday afternoon...

More photos...

Yeah, that evaporator alone was $3300! He also replaced the blower motor, heater core and something else while the dash was out. I feel my price is reasonable. LOL.

Yeah, always how it goes. I find good deals, but transport costs make it a not so good deal, lol.

REDUCED - $2795!

For those that may have been concerned about the "check engine" light...

From what I have been able to gather from another forum member (on another MB site)...

...and I quote his reply (with some spelling corrections)...

"The 26 code is the delay shift for second gear when cold.
Emission device to assure rapid cat warm-up.
Test it to jumper green vac line at shift SOV behind brake booster and see if the car hold in second.
If NO, then check for vac at that line.

The 5 code is Egr suspect is vac leak or plugged egr tube

Test is to apply vac to egr port with car @ idle ..car should attempt to stall.
If NO, then tube is plugged..if YES, then check vac line coming from SOV and going to egr".

None of these sound serious to me - at least nothing that would not cause someone to not want to purchase my car. The transmission shifts perfectly. I don't know why it would need to hold in 1st gear longer.

Price reduced to $2995. (FIRM) due to recent A/C issue - 2 days ago it started working sporadically, now I hear the compressor squeal for a moment and it will turn off, so either low on gas or needs compressor? Good news is that the evaporator is not the problem, that is new.

Also as requested - more updated pics - I took this earlier this evening after I washed it...

I wouldn't take it personal no one wants to buy it on here. No one wants to buy a car right now. Stuff even sits on Craigslist. If you want to give them a try it might be worth it. This car is usually nicer than the jalopies that I come across on that site anyway and might have more luck.

Thanks. I agree! People don't seem to be buying anything now, especially thirsty vehicles, lol. Yeah, I mentioned on another thread that I thought $2995 was a bargain on this car. Around here, junk sells for more than that and I mean JUNK. lol.

Some say the CEL being on is what is hurting me selling it ... well for now the light is off - I am sure it will re-illuminate. I reset it somehow. I will still let whoever purchases it know about the light. I am an honest person and would not want someone to get a ugly surprise like I did. Now I think that the A/C just crapping out will hurt me even more. It has worked fine, then two days ago it got to where the compressor would make a "squeak / squawk" sound, then it would turn off and the A/C would blow hot air. I guess the compressor is going out, or maybe needs oil / gas? Not sure how those work, but at least it has a new evaporator.

I suppose someone dishonest could remove the bulb or "accidentally" put in the wrong bulb like whoever worked on this car did before I got it. I still need to email the previous owner about that. He had taken the car in for a CEL and the receipt shows they repaired it, but my mechanic found the "wrong" bulb put in the check engine light. I had asked him to check it because I never seen the light come on, even when the switch was on, so I bet that mechanic pulled a fast one on the previous owner.

What a shame. Well I feel my reduced price ($2995) is an absolute bargain despite the cars couple of minor issues. It isn't perfect and isn't priced as such either, but still a darn nice car - the interior is super nice, never wrecked, no rust and the engine and transmission are fantastic and other than the recent A/C issue (and radio volume goes crazy sometimes), all else works. Even the window regulators have been replaced and all of then work. I am surprised someone has not grabbed it up at this price. I have seen hunks of junk cars sell for $3K+ around here and this is a nice Mercedes. I would drive it across the country tomorrow. Maybe someone will soon take it off of my hands so I can get something that better suits my needs at this time.

I am not going to give it away though and I am in no rush to sell. I just don't want to loose to much money, as someone that really don't make a lot of money, lol. I paid $3300. for this car (September of 2012) and have spent about $400 on it in repairs over the past 8 weeks... so selling even at $3000, I am losing about $700.

I sold my '12 Honda that I owned outright, so I have money to buy me another car to better suit my needs and I will probably do that until someone comes along wanting this one. I just prefer to sell (or trade) it first due to limited parking space. lol. I would also like to find it a good home, someone that loves, knows and appreciates Mercedes.

Thanks again!

I'm incredibly disappointed you are in Tennessee, it isn't feasible for me to travel nor ship a car ATM. I'd gladly give you $3500.00 for that car. It keep catching my eyes on here every time. I love the W140s. It's the perfect swap for an OM606 and I know just the car.

I'm really
