Fs: 89 300e w124 mechanically excellent $2500 obo

Time to let go of my 300e. I purchased this car about 7 years ago, at 150k and have at some point or another, replaced nearly every mechanical part that wears. Now has nearly 220k

Anthracite exterior with parchment/ mushroom interior. M103 3.0 engine

I'll give you the cliff notes as to what I replaced over the years, but I surely won't remember it all.

2007: ball joints, tie rods,(all) new tires, brakes, rotors, belt, tensioner, fan clutch, shocks, front and rear (bilstien hd) and new coil springs (all 4).

2008: (ish) removed head, new valve guides and seals, water pump, rubber hoses galore, valve cover gasket, exhaust gasket etc..

2008 or 2009? later, removed engine to clean out broken timing chain guide at bottom of oil pan. New oil pan gasket, timing chain guides, front and rear main seals, cam seals, etc. I basically tore it down to the long block, cleaned everything, put new rubber seals and gaskets, and put it back together.

Between 09 and 2012: replaced interior with a leather group from a 90 something e320, installed a pioneer radio, new genuine fan clutch, rebuilt the entire ac system, including the evaporator and dash pods, new compressor, o rings, condenser, dryer, pressure switches, and properly charged with r12. Still working awesome.

2012?: rear subframe. Everything. Really. Wheel bearings, parking brake shoes, brake lines, fuel lines, subframe mounts, diff mounts, flushed and filled diff with genuine merc diff fluid, painted everything with por15, after it was all sandblasted, rebuilt rear calipers, new rotors, hoses, etc etc. etc. if there is anything I forgot, it is only that I forgot to write it because I replaced it.

2013: front end rebuild, control arms, tie rods (again), sway bar bushes, wheel bearings, brakes, rebuilt calipers, rotors, brake hoses. Again, everything new.

Every part is either lemforeder, (maybe 30%), and all the rest of the parts are genuine Mercedes parts. The rotors are ate, so that would be an exception. The entire front end is genuine Mercedes parts.

Late 2013: 4 wheel alignment and 4 new Michelin primacy tires. Had aftermarket heated seats installed.

At some point or another, I redid the entire fuel system including new injectors, eha, ovp, blah blah blah. The exhaust system is about 1-2 years old (genuine mb).

Let's fast forward to December 2013; driving through this brutal winter, and the car starts acting funny. Starts hesitating bucking, and just not driving right. I park it, and jump in another car. It was too cold to even think about what was going on with it. Turns out I have not changed the cap and rotor since I bought the car.

Today, I installed cap rotor, and plugs, oil and filter. The car is still not quite 100%, but once I drive it around for a couple of days it should be fine. It. Already feels a lot better. Probably didn't help that it sat for 5 months untouched.

Here's the bad: it has rust. The fenders, jack points, even a splash on the roof. It leaks about 1/4 gallon of antifreeze per month, and about 1 quart of trans fluid every 6 months. Water has infiltrated the interior, passenger side. I believe it's in the wheel well somewhere likely rust related. The headliner is ripped from me putting large pieces of furniture in the car.

All of The door checks are busted, or disconnected. The radio is marginal at this point, and should be replaced. The antenna will sometimes not go up when asked.

This car will easily last another 5-10 more years with just basic maintenance at this point before the rust makes it unsafe. The fluid leak prevents me from parking in my brand new driveway, unless I put cardboard under it. I purchased a 300te that has stolen my heart.

I have a lot of great memories with this car. I learned how to be a competent mechanic, and I learned the ins and outs of ac. It's just that I'm done with it, and it's time for it to go.

It drives like a brand new Mercedes (1989 of course). I bet there are only a handful of people on this forum that truly know how fantastic these cars ride.

All you diesel heads should consider this car, even for parts. All of the suspension is less than 2 years old, and has less than 5 thousand miles on it. The tires alone where $650, and have only a few thousand miles on them.

And this is just the summary. Anyone with interest, I can overwhelm you with pictures of some of the various repairs that I have done over the years. I have a handful of. Receipts, but did most of my parts shopping online, either here or the parts site that sells genuine mb stuff for cheap.

I'm offering it here first as I would be happy to see it go to a forum member, but I am motivated to sell it. It will hit the Craigslist Friday if no one wants it here.

I've driven W124s with front and rear fully rebuilt suspension. I'll attest, this car drives better than anything on the road around the same age and I don't have to drive it to tell you that.

The M103 probably isn't idling up to its potential due to the fact the vacuum hoses probably have seen better days. That is simple enough to throw off the idle from its normal silk smooth idle I had with my 1987 300E.

All the vacuum lines where replaced at on point or another. The cap and rotor where burned badly, I feel like the car "adjusted" to the bad cap and rotor, and just needs a bit of time to adjust back.

I really just need to drive the snot out of it for a few more days. It's already feeling great at this point.

Sold! To the first person with enough courage to look at a 25 year old car with nearly a quarter million miles.

This one was the most difficult car I have ever had to sale due to a: my financial and emotional attachment, and b: it is just plain hard to get someone to just LOOK at a car with such age and mileage.

Just for the record, and for future buyers/ sellers, the car sold for $2,300.

Good for you!

Was it sold locally, or to someone here on the forum?

Sold via Craigslist to a local guy. I really would have liked this to go to an enthusiast, but I'm just glad it's gone at this point.

I made a goal to be down to 2 cars by fall, my 300te, and my fiesta.

Lol! Doubt it. I still have the 300te, fiesta, and the ford woody station wagon. I just sold 3 of my cars within the last couple of weeks. It's kind of liberating. I feel like I can focus more of my attention to just one car, namely my 300 wagon. I have had turbos sitting on my shelves for almost a year, and would love to finally install them.

Reality is I will likely adopt a few more $200 cars, and I'll be back up four in no time.
