1988 300E Factory Five Speed Manual Transmission

Black on black with about 230,000 miles. Interior is MB Tex and all the seats are pretty much flawless. I replaced the driver’s seat with a perfect one I found in central Iowa. Even the springs are perfect; plenty of support. Carpets are good. Dash is cracked; but I have a perfect 1988 black dash that goes with the car. Runs great, shifts great, brakes great clutch is great. The struts and shocks are good. Exhaust system is in great condition. All power windows work, sunroof works, all power on seats work, all wipers and sprayers work correctly. New wiper blades. Power mirror works. New after-market radio, with auxiliary input. New rear speakers, with new premium copper wiring run to all four speakers bypassing the fader control. The body is rust free after cutting out rusted metal around the jack points and welding in new metal. Done properly, it looks fantastic, and all points are fully functional. All rubber jack pads are in place and fully functional. Body has been repainted at some point, but looks very good. Clock in gauge cluster is inop, as is, I THINK, the fuel gauge, odometer works, but trip meter is inop. Oddly enough the cruise control works. Cruise is a nice feature on this car as 5th gear is high and she cruises along nicely while sipping gas. Two additional gauge clusters, along with miscellaneous extra parts will go with the car. Power locks work, but theft alarm has been disabled. Heat works, AC does not. Air flow in all modes of HVAC is incorrect and I suspect multiple pod failures under the dash. I have some pod repair diaphragms that go with the car, as well as a suspected good push button unit. In case the one in the dash is bad. Head gasket appears good from all inspections and I took the time to properly reseal the upper timing cover as it had a leak when I acquired the car. Car has a small trailer hitch installed, receiver type, and it looks fully functional. Lost space, and time, need to regroup, as my daily drivers (1990 300SEL, and 2005 350ML) need attention. Looking for $2500, but will entertain all offers. I have at least that in the car and countless hours. The car is really very nice, but far from perfect, and I am not presenting it as such. I’m bracing myself for comments about the incorrect antifreeze and the funny looking powder coated red valve cover.
I’m located in Hudson WI just outside the twin cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul.
PM me if interested.
Thanks,
Kent

Posting direct links for a fellow 5 speed W124 owner. Looks like a very nice car. I kinda like the painted valve cover BTW.

Good luck, it's a nice looking car.

Nevermind all that though, can you drift with that valve cover?

Great car.

Fella's; at my age a red valve cover is really living it up. I can drift and I could swear I have a full head of hair when I'm driving the car You all should get red valve covers!

If anybody's on the bubble to own a 300E factory 5 Speed, I'll lower my ask down to $2000 to make it more irresistible.

It really is lacking vented fenders.. They add performance ya know too.. For the imaginary turbo.

Don't forget the carbon fiber wrap for the trunk lid.. It makes it more light and a spoiler is always good for about 25HP [glue on wings of course].

I love this car, beautiful color combination. The paint job is really sharp. I don't know why they didn't ever paint the bumpers in the beginning the color of the car like they did in the early 90s.

In spite of the lack of vents on the fenders, it looks like the car sold. I took a deposit on it tonight from a local Craigslist buyer. Daily driver for his wife. First guy that looked at it. As a point of reference for anyone referring to this post for comp's; it sold for $2000.
I honestly thought I'd have more interest in the car from prospective buyers. I guess I'm not as smart as I thought I was
Thanks for the comments and the laughs fellas. You're good people.

2-4k seems to be the market for W124 sedans in general (not the V8 models) almost regardless of condition. Glad it sold quickly.

I agree Gator, but I thought the rarity of the 5 Speed manual would have generated more interest. I've perused Craigslist Minneapolis, key word "Mercedes" religiously for the past 9 years, have only seen ONE, and I bought and sold it. I expected an enthusiast to buy it, or at least one to pursue it. In the end, a fellow bought it as a daily driver for his wife. Could have cared less about the 5 speed, at least that's what he said. I know the car had issues, but I thought it was priced right, with room for negotiation. I have no regrets, glad someone else can enjoy it and I just wanted to move on. I just never thought I'd end up upside down on a clean, well running, black on black, 300e five speed that I didn't have all that much money in. It was a gas to drive; and if you're going to own a 300e, the 5 speed makes it a lot more fun and interesting.
