Mebbe we just don't want some unsuspecting member to follow your advice, get caught smuggling, face a jail sentence or big fines, and have his new car crushed.

unless said unsuspecting member was kind enough to film the whole thing so we could watch it unfold.....but i think he'd have to be suspecting in order to do that.....what a dilemma

Typical government regulation all fooked up. Around here there are hundreds of people running around on scooters, no plates so I am pretty sure no DL or insurance. These are multi DWI recipients still on the road, that is OK with the PoPo but bring in a well engineered car from north of the border, that you should go to jail for.

I'm not defending our goofy import laws but as someone who had experience with importing cars I was merely awaring members less versed on the subject that getting this car into the us federally legal, is a large, expensive undertaking that will require the assistance of a registered importer and extensive modifications to the car.
Peach parts gets a big chubby for 98-99 E300 turbos and a bigger chubby for wagons. I assumed this thread would get a lot of attention. Avukum I wouldn't say anyone is touchy, but it should be known that what you suggested represents several different felonies. I'm not the police and I know people have managed to sneak stuff across the border and make it state legal, but you can't bank on the customs official being ignorant, it only takes one hard ass to ruin the rest of your year. An important distinction is the difference between state and federally legal as well. You could not declare the car at the border, drive it home, apply for a lost title or something and get a title and tags. That is STATE legal. At any point ICE could seize the vehicle. It happened last month to a bunch of land rover defenders. They were brought in by a bull****ter of an importer. All the trucks were registered in the states they were seized in. They had been bull****ted to being state legal, but not federally legal. This will be my last post on this, I'm not looking to argue with anyone, if you think you can get the car in. I wish you the best of luck. And scan and email me you impot papers because there are a lot of sub 25 year old cars I am waiting to bring in.

Aha! The truth comes out! Just kidding - once again, there is a HUGE distinction between what is LEGAL and what is RIGHT, and heaven forbid someone do something of their own accord and then scratch their heads when whatever bell might wind up tolling because of it. Obviously my lifestyle and politics bleed through my post, and in theory anyway, the freedom of self expression is the true beauty of America - a point which so many of us (read:citizens) seem apathetic about as our rights and privileges are gradually and not so gradually eroded or erased altogether, whether by decree or fiat. Peace out - I have to go file a lawsuit against Absolut because they manufactured the vodka which led to me getting a DUI! Not! :-) |
