Thumbs up 1998 E300D Turbodiesel for sale - Canada

Hello all,

This car is for sale now. WDB2102251A622084. Located near Toronto, Ontario. Asking CAD $7450. Our driveway is too small now that my stepdaughter is getting a new car, so I need something way smaller than this mini-truck.

Please keep in mind that this car is a German VIN; I imported it from Germany; therefore, the odometer is in km, not in miles, which may get a bit confusing for some.

Features: Xenon lights, rain sensor, parking sensors, leather, lumbar support for driver's seat, heated seats, and some other stuff I can't remember right now. New tires.

Issues with this car: There was a coolant leak, most likely HG was at fault. used a stop leak about 10k miles ago. haven't had any coolant loss since then.

There was a fuel leak at the top of the IP. I replaced the delivery vlave seals and springs and those little copper washers. I replaced the fuel line orings with Viton. I haven't seen a drop of fuel since then.

I recharged the AC; it works ok but not as good as it should due to a defective pressure switch. I haven't replaced it. The bad switch is causing the aux fans to not turn on, so the AC isn't working all that great in slow traffic.

There is rust at the right rear wheelwell and rear license plate. I can provide better pics if you want, or even video on Youtube if necessary. Just ask.

Any questions - feel free to ask.

Oh, a wagon! Nice. Out of curiosity, what did you have to do to import one?

I had to contact a shipping company that gave me a lot of instructions on how to do the paperwork (which helped a lot). Basically I had someone drop off the car in a port, they shipped it to Halifax, I went there and paid all the fees, picked it up, drove it home 1200 miles with a temporary plate, and registered it here in Ontario; the last part was the most difficult because they couldn't figure out why the VIN number didn't show up in searches. Once they got past that, it was all good; I did an emissions test which was easy, and that was it.

wow too bad its not closer to Calif, O/W I would be an interested buyer. I've wanted a 124 300TD (wagon) but love the OM606 engine. I thought there were no 210 wagons in No America that were factory diesels.
I keep seeing a 210 diesel wagon FS in Long Beach, it was a gas to diesel conversion and is a non-turbo, but I wouldn't touch a conversion like that, too many things to go wrong.
One question: Were the spring perches checked or repaired?

As far as I know MB didn't sell any wagons with Diesel engines in North America. No idea why. But that's what I wanted, so I found a way to get mine.

A while ago I read some horror stories about the spring perches, so I ran outside to check mine; they're 100% rust free.

Canada's import law is 15 years. Ours is 25. This car couldn't be imported into the US within reason.

DieselPaul is correct on that one - only real way to do it is to register a similar model (with same colour of course!) and bring that paperwork and plate up to Canada, attach and drive home! I know for a FACT this works like a charm, as when they run the tag as part of the routine crossing, it checks out by eye. Plus, realistically the border guys aren't too worked up over older non-'exotic' stuff like regular factory MB models, potential terrorists and drugs rightfully commanding a far higher priority. BUT they do have very keen eyes for expensive stuff like Ferrari's, Lambo's, late model Merc's and Porsche's!

then what? i'm pretty sure it could be driven into the us w/ the canadian pates on it but, unless i'm missing something, getting it registered here is the issue more than physically bringing the vehicle across the border

Getting it across the border IS the easy part if done correctly. Registering it in the US is where it gets more complicated.

Yes, one could simply drive it over on the provincial tags, providing the seller would acquiesce. And yes again, arguably getting it across the border in the first place is somewhat simplistic, but registration here also takes a degree of creativity. As most states do not recognize European VINs, then there are no corresponding numbers in their respective databases. A white lie of being off by a digit model year wise will cause very few to no red flags (only fly might be if one lives in a state where VINs are verified by a third party [e.g. police] and so the claimed model year might also be suspect, but even then it's likely to slip by just due the nature of Euro cars not changing their whole body style on a yearly basis). If I had told the DMV my car was a 240D instead of what it really is (previously federalized 230e), I would have been in and out of the office in five minutes, as opposed to the 90 minutes I spend waiting for some papercrat somewhere to tell the corresponding papercrat in front of me that yes, it's ok!

Further, I mentioned this more about bringing cars INTO Canada from Europe and THEN into the states, as opposed to cars already IN CANADA, although I guess it amounts to the same thing, pretty much.

Right, yeah. Because that's not a felony or anything. You could get the car over the border that way but as others have said, you won't have any way to legitimately register the car in the US and therefore no way to insure it, which becomes problematic quickly. So maybe your idea would work for a parts car, but then you'd have the issue of not having a title to scrap it on, which most states require.

I've imported a number of cars from Canada and they've never cared about the tags. They're looking at the VIN plate. Granted, they never look very carefully, but you never know.

It would be very easy to drive a car over the border into the States without detection without bothering to register a similar car at home. Every time I've imported a car, I've put my US plates on it before driving it home. In Ohio, you can use the plates from your old car for 30 days before transferring them to the new one. I've had to alert the CBP officer to the fact that I'm importing a car - when they asked the question "What did you buy in Canada?" I replied "This car," which prompted some pretty funny looks. Importing a car from Canada to US is fairly uncommon, especially when the buyer is a US resident.

That's technically smuggling. And while it may not be difficult it usually ends in a siezed and crushed car and a fine or jail time for you.

Sounds like a bad ending.

If anyone is interested in bringing this wagon over to the US, here are some links for you.

Please know that that is my understanding of the law and that I may be wrong. I would suggest you contact a registered importer, (the only entity which is allowed to import such a vehicle to the US), and ask them about it. Here is a list. Of course, most of this is irrelevant if you import a that is a 1988 or older (1989 or older if you wait about four months ). I have a car buying guide that I got in Finland in 2005 -- I'll look through it and see what there is (doubt there is much, if anything). I'm afraid that there wasn't much made before 1989 that would satisfy most of your requirements. If you could go with a station wagon, more doors would be opened... such as 1987 300TD that you spend big $$$ fixing up into a genuinely reliable.

Couple of touchy folks here, eh? Or maybe they're LE! Whatever. This is a forum for adults who share information and ideas, not everyone is going to agree with everything and we all have a right to our opinions. I certainly wasn't trying to intentionally PO anyone else, but merely share how I might handle the scenario if I were considering the purchase. Then again, I also was a bike messenger for nearly six years - go figure!
