FS: 1967 200d - Oakland, CA
SOLD.
Asking $1800. This 1967 Mercedes 200 diesel has been fun to have, but it's time to move on. With only 55hp new, she won't win any races. What she will do is give you a grin from ear to ear every time you drive her. She's from an era when Mercedes were hand built and built to perform like tanks. There's even crumple zones (way ahead of their time)! I call her Betty. As every time I drive her, I feel like Don Draper in Mad Men. Work done: * fixed wiper mechanism that was seized from non-use (major PIA as the car seems to built around the wipers.. Google will support me on this) * replaced rear left axle seal * front right caliper replaced * modified glow plugs to run in parallel versus original series; this allows for them to warm independently versus one goes bad they all go bad Disclaimer of the bad: * front right fender has damage from not releasing the clutch soon enough before rolling into my garage :-) Replacement is included. * after a good rain there will be water inside; this might be because I park on a hillside instead of flat ground.. floor boards are still solid despite this * start/stop cable needs adjustment; at the moment I drop the clutch to kill the engine * despite replacement of the front caliper there remains a little imbalance resulting in pull under braking * intermittent short in left rear brake light The good: * truly fun to drive * includes replacement fender (grey color) that is pristine * includes missing chrome bits (along the rear trunk, along the bottom sides) * includes original workshop manual * trunk floor is still solid * power brakes (disc front / drum rear) If interested, shoot over an email to zbethem _ at _ gmail. Please include your contact information if serious. Adding a couple of updates: * review of the documentation shows a prior owner replaced the block and head from Metric Motors in Canoga Park; this was in 1997 * clutch pedal doesn't stick anymore from my testing, seems to have fixed itself More pictures here: Slideshow Last edited by zbethem; 11-15-2014 at 11:32 AM. What a neat old car, love the basic-ness.
I assume trying to keep up with modern highway traffic is pushing things a bit?

It's not too bad. It cruises fine at 70mph. The only issue I've had is an uphill on-ramp. Then it gets a bit concerning merging onto a highway at 45mph.

As a long time VW diesel driver, I sympathize and have respect.
