1979 450 SLC

This is my parent's car, currently sitting in my garage in Grand Rapids, MI. It has a little over 59K on the odometer. The car is cinnamon and the interior is camel colored leather. It has been stored indoors, at least in winter, and has never been driven in snow/salt. It is in amazing condition, and, really doesn't belong in Michigan.

It does have some new parts, like a starter and tires, but for the most part is OEM right down to the radio. Never in an accident. Original paint, etc. Currently it is running a little rough at low speed, but I did manage to drive it 200+ miles downstate before the snow flew, and it was a really nice ride.

The prices for these cars are all over the map. Based on what we've seen, we're asking $15K for this. You can contact me, Craig, at cjhsa2003@yahoo.com if interested or have any questions.

I also have a 1984 BMW 325e coupe that was my daily commuter for many years (in California), and is in below average condition, but does run. ~200K or so miles (odo/SI is busted). Lapis blue with light colored leather. I will consider any reasonable offer for it.

Details, Details, Details

You need to post a really thorough history of the car, more than you have so far. Drag out the paperwork for all the repair and maintenance that has been done and put together a detailed bio. Fill in the history over the past 35 years.

There are a lot of nice people that come on this forum wanting to sell their nice car....which I have no doubt yours is....to forum members with one thought...
these people like and own old Mercedes so they'd probably buy mine.

But, you gotta remember this is an enthusiasts forum and the members know the potential problems with 35 year old cars like yours, because many of them have owned or still own the very same car. What's the euphemism about Missouri being the "Show Me State"? Well this is the "Show Me Forum".

So if it's really worth $15 grand show us why. You've come to the right place. There are buyers on this forum, but they're not suckers for classic old cars.

Thx. Needed to get that off my chest. Been bugging me for along time to see too many sellers with one post come on here and try to sell a car and then take issue when they get no feedback.

Yes I know what you mean. I'm not offended in the least, I know this will not be easy. I wish I could put together the bio you want. The car belongs to my parents. They are 90-years old and just moved into a retirement community, many years too late IMO. They have no place to store the car other than rent a garage (or my garage, as can be seen in the pics, if you can see them - sorry if you cannot, I will try to correct). Anway, they are not too organized at this point.

I will tell you this. The car has been rarely driven over the last 20-years. Basically, they drove it to and from the winter storage location to the summer storage location, about 7-miles each way, and started it occasionally. It is currently running a bit rough, probably a plug issue would be my guess, but it runs and it actually runs great at speed, which I can attest to as I drove it 220 miles downstate recently.

Would they like to sell it? Yes. Do they want to sell it lowball after all those years of babying it? No. Is it worth $15K? I have no idea - it's a guess based on websites I've fiddled with, and prices I've seen in Autotrader. Last year I saw a 560SL ragtop nearby and the guy was asking $16.5K. It was a mess inside and the dash was torn apart. This car is not, it is immaculate. It is also not a ragtop which I realize is very desirable.

So I'm just putting it out there. No worries. No offense taken. Thanks for the feedback!

No offense, but it just reminds me a bad Craigslist ad. Pull the car out of the garage, wash it and take a whole bunch of photos of everything. It is really hard to tell whats what in a cutoff pictures in a dark garage.

I think parshoot1 is looking for more detailed history. Accidents, repairs, maybe just recent work if you don't have all the info. If you really want to sell and at a premium price, you have to put some effort into it. Make it more enticing!

I live in Michigan. I don't drive the car in winter!

The car has never been in an accident. Recent maintenance includes: New starter, new tires, new battery, oil change. That's it.

If you are looking for a high price, the best venue is eBay.

Again, as mentioned above, detail the car to the nth degree, take lots of high resolution pictures, and include detail shots, not just vanity poses.

A serious buyer of one of these cars should know all the weak points.
Address those concerns with pictures or receipts.

Anyone with half a brain is going to be suspicious of a car in Michigan claiming to be rust free. Rust free can mean one thing to a salt state resident, it means something completely different to another who lives in say, Phoenix, AZ. Research common rust areas for R107 cars, and document your claim.

IMHO, your asking price is very dear. One can easily get emotionally involved with their car (it's normal), and place an abstract premium over and above the actual value of the car. This premium does not transfer over to the buyer of your car. Someday, the values on R107 cars will rise to your level, but I'm convinced due to the number of cars out there, and the current low interest in SLC models, that it will be quite while until the values approach your asking price. I always liked the quote from one of the Barrett-Jackson principals: "You can never pay too much for a car, but you can buy it to soon." One of my baselines when I decide to sell a car is to look at eBay's completed auctions. I consider this to be a good bellwether on where a buyer values the particular car. Asking prices are just that, not selling prices.... Price guides seem to be like jewelry appraisals, value is MUCH higher than actual sales prices support. Owners also tend to assign a higher level to the car than it really is, that is most pretty nice cars are fairly a condition 3, but the owner will unrealistically rate it as a condition 2 or 1.

I'm in no way calling you on any of your claims, indeed it looks like a very well kept example, but if you want to maximize your selling price you need to do a lot more to convince a potential buyer that the car is as you represent.

Similar to real estate and location, location, location, selling a very nice old car requires presentation, presentation, presentation. I used this methodology to sell my 85 280SL last year, and got a decent amount for it, but not near what the books thought the car was worth.... And it was a "rust free" car from Phoenix, AZ, but being in VA., I had to "prove" it.

Good luck!

Jim

i had a w126 500 sel stretch limo that was the same color. it prevented it from fetching full price and i even considered having it resprayed a more traditional limo color but decided against it. it did end up selling but i think you will have the same issue. although likely a beautiful car that color is not what most folks are looking for in that car. you will find a wide range of asking prices for cars which often has little relationship to their value and eventual sale price. w/ a full maint. history, properly sorted, no issues you may get 10K+.....any issues, no matter how seemingly insignificant (e.g. not idling right) will drag the interest at that price point down.

If only...

I'd pay that in a heartbeat if the VIN started with a 107.026 instead of 107.024!

Sorry it is most definitely the latter.
