Its home in Wisconsin

Last night I flew own to Wichita for the car. I touched down about 9 PM, and took a $40 cab ride to where the car was. It was dark out, so i really didn't get a chance to look it over. I drove to Topeka, stayed in a hotel, and had breakfast with a buddy.
It took 10 hours from the moment I left the hotel, to pull into my driveway at home. 667 miles, 38.4 MPG by the gauge, 38.2 figured manually. when you account for possible different amounts of foaming of the diesel, i will call the gauge close enough.

It may be my imagination, but the 2005 seems quicker than the 2006 my wife has.

In the 10 hours, is 4 stops. 45 minutes for breakfast, a stop at a rest area to stretch. A stop for food for 30 min, and a fill up.
So my heavy foot was able to make up for the stopping times. The mapquest estimate was 10 hours, 13 minutes.

Compared to my 87 300 D, it was quite different. Nicer woodwork, better fuel economy, more power, more comfortable interior, bigger trunk, longer cruising range by about double.

For all its pluses, the 124 feels like it is whittled from a block of Iron. In some ways it's more of a driver's car.

All said, i am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

Check the on board computer's average speed that yielded that mpg?

My 10 hour average was 68. results are a bit skewed by the fact i was in stop and go construction for 30 minutes. most of the trip was spent between 75 and 80, Kansas 83. (in the 75 areas)

The average speed figure by time, is key to having more complete information. Glad you were able to gather it from the computer before it poofed away.

Are you kidding.... I will look at this every day. I wonder what kind of mileage you can get hypermiling?

I never noticed it was in Sport mode, my wife did, and that could account for me thinking the 2005 feels quicker.

As I understand the 05 & 06 E320 CDIs: The C/S selector button on the console:
S lets all 5-gears engage. C locks out 1st gear.

I would never use C, unless in snow and ice conditions.

Pretty much sums up my experience with the 2005 CDI I bought from Tyler 20 months ago.

I thought my W124s were pretty contemporary when I flew out to drive the CDI home to Virginia. After the 1800 mile drive, when I got back into the 95 W124 E300D , it suddenly felt quite dated.

When I moderate my acceleration and speed, I consistently get 40+ mpg
in the CDI. I've even logged 45 mpg on some long distance trips.

The only thing my W124 does better than the CDI is it's ability to put the top down....

Jim

Not sure what your question is? RE: "Are you kidding"

I guess it depends on what your time is worth regards "hypermiling?" If you have the time to do it, then yeah.

There was an unemployed guy here years ago that spent all his time hypermiling his old stuff. To what end, he never reported.

I rarely have the time to waste or desire to spend that much time and energy when going about my business on the road.
