WTB: 300TD Wagon

Hi,

I have been looking for a wagon for some time now. I am in southern California but would be willing to drive to nearby states for the right car. Please let me know what you have!

Looking to buy something asap!

good examples are hard to come by and most are highly inflated. It is a 31+ year old vehicle, right?

Took a chance on a barn find myself (painted, not put back together and abandoned) this past winter. I figure it's been 70+ hours getting it back on the road. It's nice but for a daily driver, I'm wondering...

Best to have lots of time, outstanding wrench skills, or deep pockets. At least two out of three!

Seems like a fair price considering all the works thats been done to keep it up!
That wagon is the same burgundy paint my '85 was - what a great running car, it carried me cross country, well to E Texas from the W coast and back twice.
The '83 has what many claim to be a better transmission though, the '85 trans was a smaller box, and the differential gearing was taller so mileage improved a bit and cruising noise was lower as lower rpm's.
The best 123 wagon IMHO would be an 82 thru 84 with the '85 rear end in it.
I believe a few '84's were produced with the smaller trans and or the lower ratio diff, need to check what is being offered if your ever looking at an '84. Of course any transmission can need rebuilding at the mileage figures you see these days.
My '79 with an '85 turbo engine is at 330K or so now and still running strong.

Don't know if you saw this ad:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/mercedes-cars-sale/371542-1982-300td-wagon-%242800.html

It's close enough and may be worth looking into if the list of "to-do" things doesn't scare you.

Thanks for the help guys. I actually have found a wagon in San Diego that I have been looking at. Its a euro version with "non USA" on the title. It has 230k miles and the seller is asking $4900. What are your thought? Does this sound like a good deal? It has recently been repainted but the interior needs some help.

Thanks!

Post Wagons

Jake ;

These are very good cars but all grey market cars *MUST* be inspected by YOU when up on a hoist as few have no rust and most have serious issues.

I have a '85 European 300TD I found with the help of the good folks right here ~ don't be in any rush , I looked at lots of turds before finding my fully optioned 7 passenger wagon in Montecito (near Sta. Barbera) ~ it had crash damage necessitating a new RF fender , grille and bumper etc. but was well worth the $1,800 I paid for it as it ran so well and still does .

Very good interior too .

Expect to need to dump in at least $1,500 in immediate repairs plus transfer and title fees .

If you get a good one , the money is well spent .

Mine zoomed right past $8,000.00 by the time I finished re painting it , five new 15 tires , all new exterior lenses (thanx goobers at the paint shop !) but it's a ream car my Wife loves to drive (still no AC) and every time she/I/we take it out we get offers on it .

So , wait , keep looking so you'll know the right one when it shows up as they're not all the same .

In the absence of photos and more details, no one can really make a call on cars of this age.

If the interior is cloth (given it's a euro), then issues can be expected... if it's MBTex or leather, if it's trashed... not a good sign unless there is a really good explanation (like my TD from Texas, which was left in a field in the sun for years with the windows rolled up while an estate was disputed).
