FS: 1992 400E Black/Saffron Well Maintained Dallas, TX
1992 Mercedes-Benz 400E
This car has a full service history, and has had well over $30k spent on it over the course of the past several years. To my knowledge, there is no material deferred maintenance. I have a spreadsheet summarizing the service history since new, as well as all of the paper records on the car. It's fully documented, well-maintained with OEM parts, and ready to go. I'm the third owner; the second owner cared for the car from 1994 -- 2014. It appears to have been bought new in Oklahoma, then in Dallas from 1994 to present. The CARFAX is clean. This is a very nice driving, very well-maintained 124-chassis sedan, equipped with the bulletproof M119 4.2L V-8 versus the far more common and much slower inline six-cylinder powered 300E. It has much more in common with the revered 500E of this era than the grocery-getter 300E and is available for a fraction of the price of a comparable W124 500E. Mercedes was at their absolute best in this era, with spare-no-expense build quality and timeless design. This well-equipped car is an excellent daily driver and has many more years of service to give. Major Specifications/Options Exterior color -- Code 040 Black / Interior color -- Code 264A Saffron Leather Slide/Tilt Sunroof Dual Airbags Locking center console storage box Engine/Transmission/Driveline Starts easily and runs quietly. No oil leaks, no oil use, no drips. Timing chains & tensioners were serviced at 111k miles and are good to go until after 200k miles. The engine wiring harness has been replaced. Passed the emissions inspection in February with no issues. Transmission shifts smoothly up and down. It was rebuilt completely in 2008 at 150k miles along with the replacement of the engine's rear main seal. The bell housing is slightly moist with transmission fluid, but it is not dripping on the floor. Rear end is quiet with no whine. Climate Control The climate control works in all positions and the air blows ice cold. The air conditioning was completely overhauled (new evaporator, dryer, switches & vacuum elements) at 133k miles. The evaporator is a huge job -- this bill was $2,600. Steering/Suspension/Brakes/Wheels/Tires The front suspension was completely rebuilt in 2006 at 137k miles. Car stops straight with no pull to either side. The front brake pads and wear sensors are brand new. The brakes were completely gone through front and rear at 145k miles. Four new, matched BF Goodrich tires with approx. 7,000 miles. The stock 8-hole alloy wheels are in very good condition with minimal scuffing and wear. Electrics The sunroof works smoothly. Windows all go up and down smoothly. The passenger rear window regulator & motor was replaced earlier this year. The factory Becker cassette deck works well with the exception of poor FM reception. The power antenna mast has been replaced with an OE Hirschman part, and the motor has been rebuilt with new gears & drive belts. Exterior lights all work with new bulbs. The tail light assemblies have been taken apart, cleaned, and replaced to ensure good grounds and contacts. The wiper transmission was rebuilt at 165k and works perfectly. The W124 has the cool articulating mono wiper arm. Paint/Body I believe the paint to be original throughout save for a repair on the DS rear door in 1998. The work was done by Mercedes Plano to a good standard, and the only way I could tell was from the prior owner's records. There are small dings and rock chips throughout the car commensurate with its age and daily driver status. The sale includes a Dr. ColorChip touch-up kit for use in addressing any rock chips. It's been professionally detailed and looks great. There is a shallow dent below the trunk lid and a couple of minor scratches. There is a crack in the lower front bumper. All of the glass, including the windshield, is original, date-coded Sigla and is in good condition throughout. Interior The Saffron leather is a unique color that you don't see on W124s too often. It is in very good condition save for a cut on the driver's seat outside bolster. No other cracks or issues. The color is very warm and inviting, contrary to many of the greys and beiges that you see in cars today. All of the interior wood is in excellent condition, with no cracks and a great luster. No dash cracks whatsoever. Headliner is in good condition with minor droop over the rear seats. Carpets are in very good condition with brand new OE Mercedes all-weather rubber mats. What's on offer here is a genuinely well-maintained car with a 275-horsepower V-8 that is in very good condition for being 23 years old. The operative words in that last sentence are "23 years old." If you are expecting an utterly flawless Mercedes-Benz for my asking price, then perhaps your expectations should be adjusted. If you aren't comfortable with the care and feeding of an older car, then perhaps a vehicle of this vintage is not for you. If you are a DIY type, there are a wealth of resources online to help you economically run this car well into the future. Please appreciate the fact that this is a fine older car and not just a "cheap Mercedes." Asking $3,950 or close cash offer. Happy to send pictures upon request or you can search the Dallas CL. |

She's A Beaut!
.....and you got her looking really clean. How about some engine shots. You're making a change after only a year of ownership?

It's a great car, just thinning the herd. I bought a new daily driver, and the 400E is somewhat redundant in my fleet. It's a great driving 124, and quite quick. A R129 500SL is next on my shopping list and will fill the open position in my garage, as well as keep things in the M119 family. What a great motor!

Now that it's sold: Not to be critical, but the engine compartment is less than stellar in condition and cleanliness. |

True, and I couldn't help but to note that the car wasn't brand new.
