Fs: 1980 240d
This is an excellent project car.
It has 192K miles on it. Vacuum pump was recently rebuilt by previous owner. Engine was rebuilt 12K miles ago to fix an excessive oil consumption problem. This problem, however, was NOT corrected. It also lopes at idle when warm. 4 speed manual transmission was recently rebuilt by prior owner. Body is in superb condition with original paint (will buff out nicely), and only one small rust spot that I know of, behind driver side rear tire. A/C present but not functioning. 240D A/C sytems not complicated like the 300D models. Cruise present but not functioning. aftermarket AM/FM cassette stereo. Recommend junking for a better unit. Interior, I would rate as an 8 on a scale of 1 - 10. Healiner is damaged from moisture getting through rear window seal. One very small flaw in driver seat. Kick panel on drivers side broken (plastic very brittle). Rear defogger not working power antenna goes up and down, but button on dash does not work. Dome lights not functioning. Odometer works perfectly. Passenger side door needs lube or adjustment (have to shut hard) Will deliver in a 400 mile radius for cost of fuel. $1,000 obo. Please respond by email @ bfoust@ntws.net. I am not sure what the cause of the oil consumption is. I've purchased some valve stem seals in an effort to see if that makes a difference. I just haven't had the time to install them. Compression for the car was 1: 310, 2: 380, 3: 380. 4: 310. These figures, while too far apart in the % difference category, are all above teardown spec.
The car is also due for a valve lash adjustment, and in fact compression did not rise on the two low cylinders when the wet test was done. The previous owner did the overhaul himself, so there could be any number of problems internally. I remember my old Rabbit, that had vertical scoring on the #4 cylinder. It would also pass a leakdown test, but I knew that it would eat oil. I never got that car running to verify this. It currently uses oil at the rate of 1 quart every ~300 miles. |
