1955 Mercedes 300C, Strawberry Red, "Adenauer-Wagen"
1955 Mercedes 300c
• Coachwork by Sindelfingen • Comprehensive restoration with known ownership history • As ordered new in Strawberry Red (DB543) • 2996 CC SOHC 6-cylinder engine, with twin Solex carburetors • 3- speed Borg Warner Automatic Transmission Chosen by embassies, dignitaries, and heads of state, the Mercedes Benz 300 sedan was the high status of German cars in the 1950s. Most famously used by West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, the 300 was often referred to in Germany as the “Adenauer-Wagen”. Other notable figures that chose the 300 sedan for its style and grace – The Shah of Iran; the Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie; Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru; and King Gustav of Sweden. Produced from 1951 through 1962 in a very successful run, the car saw four generations – 300, 300b, 300c, and 300d. The design was ultra conservative for 1951, and evolved only slightly over the 12 years. The 300c was most notable as the first to offer an automatic transmission, heralded by the MB marketing department – “Difficult situations may now be recognized faster, and by reacting then within the twinkling of an eye, you and your Mercedes-Benz 300 will master the situation every time.” This car was ordered new by the original owner, a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, in Strawberry Red - a color normally reserved for the more sporting cars in the Mercedes-Benz line up. The car was sold in the early 1960s to another Pittsburgh resident, before being acquired by the third owner in 1969, with 43,000 miles showing. Over the next 15 years, a comprehensive restoration was completed. This car was featured on the cover of The Star, the Mercedes-Benz Club of America magazine in 1993 (a copy is included with the car). The car remained in Pittsburgh through 2014, now residing in the Seattle, WA area. Used sparingly since the restoration, for club events and summer car shows, this 300c is ready for the next chapter. A striking car in person, still befitting of dignitaries, the car receives comments whenever it is seen. An elegant car for touring, and with the full length sliding sunroof, a near open top experience while enjoying the fair weather days. Included with the car are items of interest: • Record file, showing most receipts for restoration and service items, utilizing a variety of period vendors in Pittsburgh and the Eastern seaboard. • Original Owner’s Instruction Manual • A copy of the original order file from MB • Original Sales Brochure, featuring a Strawberry Red 300c on the front • 500+ page service manual (copy) • Factory spare parts kit (bulbs, fuses, in original box) • September/October 1993 Issue of The Star, on which this car is the cover car While there were a total of 1,432 Mercedes-Benz 300c Sedans built, there is no record of how many were produced in Strawberry Red – from that very small number, how many have been restored in the original hue - you can feel confident you will not come across another anytime soon! Please note this car is titled as a 1955 vehicle, though sometimes referred to as a 1956 car due to order/delivery in September 1956. 50+ pictures here - 1955 Mercedes 300c - NW European Price - $100,000 Car is located in Issaquah, WA.
