WTB: W114 or W115 sedan (NYC)

Hello,

Long-time admirer of these cars and I’d like to start looking a bit closer to see what’s out there. I’m casually looking for the following and wanted to see if anyone is selling or has any leads?

- sedan
- manual shift
- pre-1974 (i.e., looking for a small-bumper car)
- dark exterior color such as black, brown, red, or green
- Cognac, bamboo, or red interior (did Stroke 8s even come with red interior?)
- slightly prefer gas to diesel engine but would consider both
- looking for a well-maintained car, not a project
- prefer to keep the search local for now but would consider traveling a bit further for a good car

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks!

I presume you've seen this one?

1968 MERCEDES BENZ 250

(Interior color doesn't match your specs, unfortunately).

I parted a '75 with a red interior, so they existed at least later on.

Good luck in your search! I may be selling my '72 in the spring but it meets very few of your criteria.

250 in Brooklyn

Hello:

I'm in no way affiliated with the seller, nor do I know the car, but I watch the local Craigslist ads pretty religiously and this car has been for sale for quite some time now:

1968 MERCEDES BENZ 250

It might be worth a look.

An east coast example mandates a rust examination in real depth. Those models loved to rust easily. The fuel injected versions In my opinion are more desirable.

If you luck into one with the zenith carbs working well take care of them. Some were converted with other carb manufacturers products. They are not easy on fuel but that may not be a consideration.

Fortunately they do not have large collector value. Even the coupes. Finding one of those years with a standard transmission may be hard. I do not think they were sold in America with them. Maybe the diesels where.

Hi all,

I saw and drove the Brooklyn car today (new link here: 1968 MERCEDES BENZ 250). Here are my notes (though do take with a grain of salt as it is my first time seeing, let alone driving, a W114):

- body seems pretty straight
- a little rust in the engine bay
- dry trunk
- moisture in front footwells (driver and pass), not too bad
- driver side rear footwell is dry
- some water in rear footwell on pass side
- relatively dry underbody
- front pass window sags a little
- aged (dry and cracking) windshield gasket but otherwise complete
- didn't notice any standing water in the engine bay
- gear lever slips easily into all gears from a standstill, but grinds when engaging third (worn synchros?) while the car is in motion. i didn't attempt fourth as we never got up to hwy speed.
- aftermarket ac is inop
- peeling headliner
- cracks in dash and steering wheel
- quickly started up in the cold, idles smoothly if a little high
- felt like slightly lumpy fuel delivery under acceleration
- gauges seem to work, no signs of overheating
- I believe seller is negotiable at $4500 OBO (although ad says $5500)

My bottom line: with a little elbow grease, seems like it'd make a decent driver-quality car, or alternatively a good candidate for a rolling restoration. Seemed like quite good condition for a Northeast car, but it is a bit (or a lot, depending on your perspective) of a project car. Too much in my case- I'm looking for something more turn-key. I know of a nearby Mercedes-Benz independent that can perform a PPI for anyone who'd like a more comprehensive analysis.

Cheers.

Nice it had a standard transmission. I think the earlier the year the better chance of seeing standard transmissions.
