FS: 1963 220S Fintail Sedan - S. California
Gonna get rid of the Fintail. Sad but it needs someone who will finish it.
I bought this car 3 years ago because I wanted a project. It had been in storage indoors in New Mexico for the prior 15 years. Previous owner had no records for the car but had owned it for a long time. Over the past 3 years I have brought this car back to life and it is mechanically very sound. It has little to no rust. It features a rare Artic Kar trunk-mounted air conditioning system that is not blowing cold. Repairs/replacements: 1. All fluids replaced, including oil, gear box, differential, steering box with correct fluids 2. Used windshield professionally installed 3. New OEM Mercedes windshield gasket, professionally installed 4. Fuel tank cleaned 5. Fuel sender cleaned 6. Fuel lines cleaned 7. Fuel filter replaced (not OEM, as no OEM fuel filter existed) 8. Gas tank flower pot replaced 9. Spark plugs and wires replaced with correct resistance parts 10. Carburetors rebuilt (2 solex, progressive linkage) 11. Linkages adjusted as per Mercedes Service Manual 12. Fuel pump replaced (OEM Mercedes) 13. Subframe mounts replaced (OEM Mercedes) 14. CV Boot replaced (OEM Mercedes) 15. Trunk gasket replaced (OEM Mercedes) 16. Water pump replaced (OEM Mercedes) 17. Thermostat replaced 18. Rear brakes - shoes re-lined, arched to match drums. Drums turned, cylinders and hoses replaced. 19. Front brakes - rebuilt calipers (ATE) replaced, hoses replaced, master cylinder replaced. 20. Clutch slave cylinder replaced (ATE) 21. Shift bushings replaced 22. Tires replaced with correct size 23. Compression tested - good 24. Dash pad replaced with un-cracked used dash pad - no issues, looks perfect 25. Wood refinished, include windshield surround, dash, door wood. Door window wood 26. Door cards re-dyed Roser Red (original color) 27. Correct working Europa TG radio is available, currently car has working Europa TR radio (a superior radio) 28. Turn signal switch replaced with good used 29. Heater valves rebuilt 30. Temperature sender rebuilt, tested, installed 31. Radiator is new, not OEM, fabricated by a radiator shop in original pattern 32. Wheels aligned and balanced 33. Points replaced, timing set 34. Steering coupler rebuilt (OEM Mercedes parts) and installed Summary: Rust-free car, drives excellent, no smoke, good compression, runs at operating temperature correctly, comes with original (dealer installed?) Artic Kar trunk trunk-mounted air conditioner, complete, fans working, not charged. Very supportive seats. Steering has no slop. Brakes excellent. All gauges and electronics work except for odometer/speedometer, which failed in November 2016. Power brake booster works correctly. Carpets in decent condition. Wood and door panel restoration came out excellent. Dash pad is perfect. Although there is damage to the leather seats, the pads and springs are extremely supportive. This is a very comfortable car to sit in, front or back seats. It is a pleasure to drive. Everything mechanical has been done to make this car nearly 100%. Some cosmetics done and done well. Heating controls work correctly. Most chrome is good. Original paint, original interior (except as restored) What it needs: Needs seats re-skinned, paint, and minor body work. The leather seats are in worse condition than the pictures show - rear seat top is cracked and baked. Idle speed is sometimes high, sometimes low, indicative of a vacuum leak that I have not found. AC will need hoses replaced, compressor replaced, and probably other parts replaced. Main unit in trunk in good condition. Speedometer/odometer stopped working in November 2016. Threshold grey rubber at door openings is brittle, door rubber is fair, windlace is fair. Starting at $7000 and will go down over time.
