1979 300D - 97K Miles - Medium Red - Everything Works & it's Beautiful!!! - $4500 OBO

https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/d/1979-mercedes-benz-300d-97k/6465925204.html

I'll just copy and paste the add here but please just look at the add for pictures. This forum sucks for pics and we all know it. I've shipped a car on this forum before and have sold many parts. Excellent references available on request.

I'm selling my Sunday/"go out" car because my wife and I are getting married in June so we need the $$$

I'd like to get $4500 because it's getting super hard to find a pre 100k mile w123

But feel free to make an offer!!!

Btw I got lazy and took the interior pics before I got it detailed. The seats and everything look a lot better now.

1979 Mercedes Benz 300D - Diesel W123 - OM617 Engine w/ 97K Miles

I got the car in a barn find across the Sound this past summer at had been sitting for 5-10 years in an old airplane hanger but she started right up. Although i had to tidy up and replace a few things to get it into daily driver condition as it is now. As follows is the details on the vehicle and the work that has been put into it, all in the last 500 miles or less.

The proof I have for the vehicles 97,200 miles is the little to no wear on the steering wheel, brake, and gas pedals. I pulled the cluster to change the oil pressure gauge and took a picture of the stamp on the back of the speedo/odo and it clearly states 1979. The last update in the oil change booklet is 39k. And I believe the last oil change sticker removed from the booklet is 50k or 60k. ALL OF THIS IS PICTURED ABOVE.

Here are a few bullet point cool features because I know most people wont have the patience to read this whole add

- OM617 97,200 miles
- New Monarch Nozzles in rebuilt injectors
- New Monarch Glow Plugs and updated to parallel wiring
- Good original Medium Red (DB 516) paint (professionally buffed, polished, and waxed)
- EVERYTHING switch, button, window, lock, system, light, blinker, seal, door stop, striker, and etc WORKS!!!
- 33 Gallon gas tank (750-1000 miles per tank)
- All fluids and filters changed
- Bosch Euro headlights w/ custom matching maroon bezels inside the lense and clear corners
- Yes, the dash is cracked under the dash cover.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION:

- OM617 97,200 Miles (Pretty much speaks for itself)
- Replaced injectors with 5 rebuilt injectors fitted with brand new Monarch Nozzles (pictured) 100 miles ago, installed immediately after Diesel Purge and fuel filter change
- Replaced all glow plugs with brand new pencil style Monarch plugs and rewired parallel 500 miles ago
- Valve Adjustment and Genuine MBZ valve cover gasket 200 miles ago
- Cold starts just like a good running pre 100k diesel engine should.
- Very minimal grayish white smoke when it first kicks over in the morning, cant say ive noticed any much more than that.
- New Bosch primer pump 500 miles ago
- Automatic 4 Speed transmission
- Shifts smooth with no flares, slips, hard shifts or clunk downs.
- All shift points are correct and in line with Factory Service Manual specifications
- Working kick down switch
- Fluid and filter replaced with OEM products

MAINTENANCE:

-EVERY FLUID AND FILTER HAS BEEN CHANGED ON THIS CAR IN THE LAST 500 MILES!!! (excluding rear diff)
- ATF Fluid flushed and replaced along with a New Mann Filter and GenuineMBZ Gasket
- Oil Change with Mehle Filter 200 miles ago (LiquiMoly "Engine Flush" performed before the change to remove 97k miles of diesel engine gunk)
- Diesel Purge performed 100 miles ago
- New primary and secondary fuel filters installed immediately after the Purge
- Fuel tank & complete fuel system algae and water treatment (diesel marine grade) 150 miles ago
- New Mann air filter 500 miles ago
- New Kengst power steering filter and and new power steering fluid 200 miles ago
- Bled brakes, checked for leaks (& fixed a leaky hose), inspected pads & rotors, and swapped in fresh brake fluid 50 miles ago
- Coolant flush and swap 500 miles ago
- Great GoodYear tires with all sorts of tread left!

THERE WAS NO PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE THAT FORCED ME TO DO ANY OF THIS MAINTENANCE. IT WAS JUST THE RIGHT THING TO DO ON A CAR THAT HAD BEEN SITTING AND NOT BEING DRIVEN FOR CLOSE TO 10 YEARS.

EXTERIOR:

- California Car for the first 30+ years of its existence.
- Medium Red (516 color code) is the official Mercedes Benz color name (dark red or as i like to call it "Blood Red")
- Paint buffed, polished, and waxed professionally 1 month ago. Paint looks showroom wet, beads all rain water, and has a clear enough reflection to shave your face in!!!
- Slight "nail head size" blemish / oxidation present on random spots thru out the shell. Nothing worth crying over what-so-ever and only visible when closely inspecting the car, from 5 feet back you cant even notice it.
- No Uni-Body rust in jack points, or spare tire compartment. There is a minimal amount of surface rust on some of the non-painted metal parts, as expected on a 39 year old vehicle.
- Resprayed Budnt wheels, still looking pretty dang good
- Bosch Euro headlights and clear corners
- Headlight bezels (under the glass lense) have been tastefully paint matched to the vehicle color

SHE STRAIGHT UP IS A BEAUTIFUL W123!!! A RED 300D IS FEW AND FAR BETWEEN DONT MISS OUT! YOU WILL LOOK AND FEEL LIKE LUXURY DRIVING IN IT AND WILL OFTEN GET WAVES, POINTING FINGERS, AND THUMBS UP.

INTERIOR:

- I LIKE TO BE HONEST IN MY ADDS. THE INTERIOR IS THE ONE PART OF THE VEHICLE (BASICALLY ONLY THE FRONT SEAT AREA) THAT IS NOT COMPLETELY UP TO MY STANDARDS. THE CULPRIT TO THE IMPERFECTIONS SEEM TO BE WEATHER CHECKING FROM THE HOT CALIFORNIA SUN. Details below and as see pictures.
- I believe the interior color is called Bamboo. (I call it peanut butter) It is the standard MB Tex material and sports no visible rips or tears and the seat cushioning seems up to par. No bits, bobs, carpets, and etc are missing, besides the fold down arm rest.
- Rear carpets, floor mats, & door cards are all in good condition with no rips or sun bleaching. Rear window deck carpet is sun bleached.
- Drivers and passenger floor mats have a few rips and wear. Front door cards show a little wear and a small quarter sized rip
- Drivers side carpet along the bottom of the door has a ~10" by ~3" section cut out below the e-brake.
- Beautiful new black automotive grade carpet dash cover and all Zebrano is present and in good condition
- The dash IS CRACKED under the cover.
- Brake, throttle, and e-brake pedals all show little to NO WEAR. Which is totally in line with a true 97K mile car
- Steering wheel is the best conditon I've ever seen on a W123. Little no NO WEAR, dimples 100% present all the way around, and high gloss finish still intact. (Along with the brake and gas pedal wear, this is a MUST for an authentic 97K mile vehicle)

SYSTEMS, MISCELLANEOUS, AND FEATURES:

- EVERY SINGLE SYSTEM, BUTTON, SWITCH, LOCK AND ETC WORKS IN THIS CAR. (minus the rear window defrost, which is intermittent, sometime it works and sometimes it doesnt)
- Cruise control works but has been disabled (removed cable from linkage) because there was a factory recall delete on this feature of the car. They would often malfunction and not let you slow down when engaged.
- As far as I can tell the infamous Automatic Climate Control II Servo is working (no cracks in housing, sounds correct, and all heating features are functional)
- All the controls / button on the climate control work and open/close all of the vacuum controlled vent pods accordingly
- The York AC compressor has been pulled, sent out, and professionally rebuilt. Although it has not be installed yet.
- All 4 windows roll all the way and all the way down
- Sunroof is in working order as well and tracks have been greased.
- All power locks work.
- Complete vacuum system is fully operational thru out the vehicle
- NO LEAKY door seals or window seals.
- Replaced oil pressure, coolant temp, and fuel level gauge cluster (to fix oil leak at oil pressure gauge in the dash, haha "W123 Problems...")
- All gauges in the instrument cluster work (fuel level gauge works but is somewhat imprecise due to the 33 gallon gas tank that has been installed)
- Extra 12 gallon gas tank, wrapped in hi quality carpet, has been professionally and tastefully plumbed into the trunk. THIS IS NOT AND HAS NEVER BEEN A VEGGIE OIL TANK. It is strictly an expansion to the 21 gallon tank stock tank and is tied together.
- The 33 gallon tank allows you to drive up to 1000 miles on one fill up (highway driving) and around 800 miles city driving
- Functional Becker Europa II AM/FM Radio
- Updated Alpine speakers all around
- WORKING ANTENNA!!! Yes, it goes up and down.
- Equipped with a block heater

Thumbs up

Wow, _nice_ .

A few $ would make this into a total stunner .

FWIW, my 420,000 + W123's all have the original pedal pads with no visible wear .

That steering wheel tells the whole story ! .

I'm amazed this hasn't sold yet .

Once you finish the Klima I's evil servo and get the AC working it'll sell to the next person who looks at it ~ the Klima I HVAC can be a bleeding PIA but once fixed it's glorious . I did mine and wow, is it ever nice .

...But not the AC according to what I read .

Once the Evil Servo from hell is working properly the rest is a cake walk....

I was driving along in one of my old Mercedes Diesels to day thinking about this car and how, it to - day were fifteen years ago, it'd be a $12,000.00 car, instantly sold to some hipster jerkhoff who'd kill it in short order .

I have well past $10K into my beater 240D that's nice and tidy and clean but is also worthless and slow no matter how much I love it .

Cheaper to buy this car and have a nice hobby / weekend ride I should think .

Ya the only reason the ac doesn't work is because I haven't installed the freshly rebuilt York ac compressor. Which comes with the car, along with the ac belt, and 2.5 Gallon can of Mercon R12, and the ACCII FSM.

But yes I probably shouldn't be 100% claiming the servo works until the ac pump is installed and I KNOW for a fact that everything is in working order

I just wish someone would at least make an offer on this.

The vintage Benz market SUCKS rn I have had literally 20 people no call no show from Craigslist test drive appointments. And people offering me $1500 because the dash is cracked under the cover. ..

The dash is cracked on every w123 so it's a wash, u can't really use that as a bargaining technique.

Lol sorry my rant is over. I just really need this gone to pay for my wedding, I'm getting stressed out hahah

Best of luck with the Wedding ! .

BT, DT and no regrets .

If you can wait until Spring it should move right out .

You're correct, the Classic Diesel Mercedes market is dead, too bad the jerkhoff hipsters ruined so many good cars before fleeing .

craigslist is full of flakes, I don't sell there, just buy .

Bring a Trailer can work well, or even eBay but both have their own fee's which should be looked into..

This car is basically the 300D twin of my 240D. If I had the space and the engine was a turbo I would be all over it. I'm honestly shocked nobody has bought this yet.

Post How To Sell

For a vehicle like this you need to get eyes on it, that'll do the trick and at the price you're asking IMO .

You should contact BAT and ask why they said no, it's their typ of deal : screamingly cheap and not beat up junk......

I took my old beat up 1981 240D to two show & shines Saturday by request, it has chips and dings every where plus 364,000 miles yet the folks who looked at it asked me if I wanted to sell it constantly.....

Your car is far better IMO .

I know that finding someone to finish the AC shouldn't exceed $500 (should be less IMO but I'm old) and will really help move it .

I too am amazed it's not sold yet, I mentioned it to all the Vintage M-B Diesel Heads there and they were amazed but had no space or money (or both) to buy this amazing car .

Ya I agree I should bring it around some car shows. You are right. I kinda started something similar to that today. Threw some for sale signs on it and parked it on a busy road near a hipster drive in burger joint. It's a very popular place for people to sell cars like this.

If I can find some time I'll throw the ac in too. It's just that most people in Seattle don't use ac ever, it's kinda like a running inside joke here. But ya i do understand that people would live EVERYTHING to work in a vintage like this.

And ya basically bring a trailer said that they have too many w123 sedans at the moment and that I needed to sell it no reserve. So I emailed back and said ok, I'll drop it to no reserve... But still they replied that they have too many w123 sedans and they still were no interested.

Do basically I'll just try again in a month or so if it doesn't sell
