OK, I've called and left him a message.
Anybody else think that this veggie car might be alright? Are there any other W210 turbo OM606s out there?

Eric, not that I have any experience with diesel engines ... but I would avoid the diesel previously run on WVO. It strikes me as problematic. Continue your search for a well-maintained stock W210 Turbo Diesel.

I was thinking along those lines when I looked at the listing. I've seen more than a few Benz's with 5 cyl engines (and a few 240D's) with plugged fuel lines, leaking seals and soft hoses because they didn't use Viton and injectors that were damged by veggie oil. I'm sure if you are patient you will find the right car. I once saw a nice 300D, a 123 chassis, at a supermarket and after I gave it a twice over eyeball and saw no dings or signs of abuse I glanced at the Odometer and saw it had only some 30K miles on it. A few minutes later the owner came out and as he pulled out his keys I greeted him and said I admired the way he kept his car. He said his daughter convinced him it was a safe car to drive and he only drove it to get essentials a few days each week. There are low mileage cars out there you just have to be at the right place at the right time as they say! DDH

BTW there's a nice looking '99 in NOrthridge (by nice looking I mean the clearcoat looks good, unusual for these silver cars. BTW seems E300D's were all delivered in silver or an occasional black?) That is the kind of car I would make offer for around half what they are asking and hopefully get for a good foundation for shotgun replacement of all suspension parts, hoses, etc. I would want to run the engine history, see faults etc before deciding because trans faults can be signs of needing a repair. Don;t ask me how I learned that the hard way on my '99 purchased at about 220K miles on the odometer anyhow my '99 now shifts like clockwork no slipping no flaring just pure torque to the rear wheels! https://bakersfield.craigslist.org/cto/d/1999-mercedes-300d-diesel/6510225043.html

Everyone is saying steer clear of the car, but you haven't looked at it yet or talked to the owner yet. You know real no history. Everyone runs from a veggie car, but I've bought them with success and NO ISSUES and ran the he'll out of them.
Please take my word for it and just talk to the owner and give the car the benefit of the doubt as well as the owner.

fyi, since we've been looking at these models..... not that this would be a candidate due to the distance, i thought it was pretty cheap. in the ad it references a recent DPF issue, which i had to look up. it stands for diesel particulate filter and apparently it gets clogged, and is kind of a pain to clean (i got sucked into a youtube DPF cleaning vortex). also it throws a code that needs to be cleared after the DPF is cleared.

From what I've been able to find, it appears that the first year E-class Bluetecs did not have urea injection and were only legal for sale in 45 states, but the second year ones had it and were 50 state legal.

Yeah that's what all of the sellers of these PsOS keep saying in their ads.
It's actually not the engines that are giving me trouble....... it's EVERYTHING else.

Eric, that's been my experience; The engines run on and on, while the car almost falls apart around it. That being said, I would like to add my 2 cents; when it comes to veggie cars/wagons, there are two types - the ones with the conversion, heated filter and/or tank, sometimes even lines, and even one-tank versions, all designed to run filtered, but straight veggie oil. This is converting the car to match the veggie oil, and still allows the glycerin to go through the engine - that's the bad news, that crap is so thick and sticky, and the engines may burn some of it, but I don't think it burns it all.
The other method is to "convert" the oil to match the car - making biodiesel from veggie oil. With this method, the car/wagon remains totally stock. The glycerin is removed in this process, and one is left with a cleaner fuel. I've been using this method for almost ten years, and only had to replace the fuel filter - and that was a few years ago. This also adds lubrication, which is removed from modern diesel fuels from the pump. I know I'm biased, but I think this is even better for longevity of the engine. I just wanted to point out what I feel is a critical difference, when all "veggie cars" are not the same. Often the distinction between straight veggie use, and biodiesel use gets lost. Sounds like it may be a moot point in this case, since you haven't had a return call. But if you, or anyone else here, consider a car with a veggie history, ask about the type of fuel, biodiesel, vs actual veggie oil. It could make a significant difference. Bob PS- Personally, I would avoid a car with any of the conversion items I mentioned; extra tank, heated fuel filter, etc.. anything that suggests it had straight veggie oil run through it for any length of time. But I would be ok with a car with a biodiesel history. Last edited by BobBushLouKy; 03-07-2018 at 09:36 AM. Reason: clarity |

That does help clarify some things. Thanks! The car in question did have the full kit that allowed the use of straight veggie oil.
The search continues!
