FS: 2005 E320 CDI BLUE 213K MILES $3500

Folks,

I bought this car back in 2013 from Tyler Hoover.
Here's the link to his add on PP:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/mercedes-cars-sale/344148-fs-2005-e320cdi-blue-169-000-miles-%2410-000%2A-%249000-without-amgs-wichita-ks.html

Bought the car, picked it up in Wichita, then drove straight through to Virginia. By the end of the trip, I was sold on the car. Forty plus mpg, and loads of power, what's not to like....

We've enjoyed the car, so much that we decided to buy a newer diesel.

Looked for a low mileage CDI, but eventually decided to go for the new 4 cylinder Bluetec engine. The new car is nice, but it lacks the kick in the pants acceleration of the CDI, and the big Bosch cloud when floored!

For the last year or so, our daughter has been driving the car, it replaced her W202 C230 Kompressor. But.....it's not the right fit for our daughter, so we've picked up a pickup for her. Our Son in Law was trading in his 2wd truck with 37K miles on it for a 4wd truck.

So, here's the deal.

The car has a current problem with the RF wheel speed sensor. It's getting an erratic reading. I've got an Xentry system and when I check the 4 speed readings, I confirm that the RF goes to zero on occasion.

I ordered a new speed sensor, and installed it, but still got the same error.
I attempted to disassemble the hub, but found the inner bearing was frozen on the spindle.

At this point, I buttoned up the car, as it's still driveable with the error code. I've since purchased a used spindle/hub (69k miles), plus a new set of rotors and pads (hey, as long as I'm there). The spindle, rotors, and pads remain uninstalled as of today......

One week ago, while we were out of town, our daughter called and said the speedo had gone red, was displaying a brake warning. She waited 5 minutes and restarted the car with no warning. Since then the red warning has not returned.

A third thing I've noted, is the rack boot on the passenger side is torn.

I've pulled the codes for the car:

SBC:

C261E hydraulic fault or brake light switch faulty
C2452 L6/2 RF wheel speed sensor. Inspect distance from sensor to rotor

ESP:

7202 DTR: Test wheel speed sensors
5611 System faults Chk SBC Unit
44AF Chk L6/2 RF
443A Chk L6/2 RF
44AE Chk lines between N47-5/BAS/SBC

As expected, the RF wheel speed sensor is flagging a code.....

Now, here's some recent stuff....

New set of Michelin Premier A/S tires installed in December 2017.
New primary battery last fall.
Recent serpentine belt.
New compressor 2 years ago.

No black death, all injectors are sealed. The car had a bad case of black death when I bought it from Tyler, it's fixed now.

All the glow plugs work. I've replaced a few of them over the years, easy to do on this engine.

Overall, the car runs great, and all features still function. We've kept it garaged, and the car still looks good 5 years later.....

I'm on the fence about selling this car as is, or spending the time to fix it and keep the car. It's a great car, but I really do not need it, I should be putting my limited energy into the old cars.........

Again, the car is driveable as is, the speedo will flag the wheel sensor and give a warning, as it disables the cruise and raises the power steering effort sightly.

Jim

Ha ha. Me too. I want this. I got a Prius when I got divorced. My son drives my 210 now. I drove a minivan. I was out of the diesel I just got a Prius a month ago for my commute.

Then a guy buys my old 6.5 diesel truck and has a 81 sd rust bucket from ny to trade in on it for 400. I repaired some things. Fell back in love with the sd 617. 3 weeks later I have a nice 85 sd which will be my other sons when he is 16 and a nice 1975 240d manual from Germany one owner for a daily driver that is mine for 2000 total. Cheap and I think another 85 sd next week. Now I want to sell my Prius and buy this.
Lol. Diseased.

You will need to pull hub to resolve speed sensor issue. The inner bearing seal is part of the sensing mechanism and if seal is not installed properly it will cause issue described.

Yup.

That's why I got stymied when the inside wheel bearing refused to part company with the spindle, had to get another spindle assembly. Pete should have all the parts, the replacement spindle, inner seal, and new rotors and pads (while your there...), were in the trunk.

As I mentioned, it's been a very nice car. We've enjoyed it, enough to decide to get a REALLY "new" MB diesel. With the new car, I really didn't need the CDI, and Linda is quite fond of the 300TD, so the old wagon beat out the newer CDI. Go figure, heh. With my declining health and chemotherapy, I just don't have the time and energy to keep up everything like I'd want to, so much as I do not want to do it, sometimes things have to go.

Met Pete at the airport in the new Bluetec (his request), brought him home to see the car, then sent him off with a full tank of fuel. Nice meet yet another member of the forum. I didn't think he'd make it home without license plates, but I guess he did!

Good luck Pete, replace the spindle, clear the codes, and you are good to go. My cousin has almost 300k on his CDI, amazing cars, I'm hoping the new Bluetec is as nice when it's got this many miles on it.

Thanks all. Yep Jim gave me a new rear seal. I remember i did this on my ex wifes 2006 e320. Replaced that rear seal and repacked the bearing.

The only play is coming from the outer tie rod. Its is shot. I ordered an mb one from pelican. 63.00. Good deal imo. Anyone notice the local stores are charging more than dealer for mb parts ? Oreilly wanted and autozone wanted 90.00 for a tie rod end .. crazy. The local dealer wanted 83.00. Thanks Pelican!

Anyway , ill see if the tie rod fixes it. It has a lot of play. Seems that it could throw off the sensor when i hit the brakes. Maybe not though. Ill let you know.
