Jaguar...RUN, RUN LIKE THE WIND!!!
As a former Jag owner, I would contend that most are beautiful, crafted well, luxurious as can be, high quality appointments, etc. etc. But they are legendary in their lack of reliability, especially with the electricals. And it's a DESERVED notoriety, one that assists the steep depreciation curve these cars are inflicted with! Some years ago, I picked up a 92 V-12 XJS convertible for a song! Gorgeous teal paint with camel interior, and it turned heads everywhere...when it was running. Though mechanically sound, the "check engine" light came on more often than the blinkers, and I put $6K into repairs on a car that was driven only 12K miles during my ownership! Since the electricals were Delco (after Ford bought Jag), I figured I dodged the venerable "Lucas" curse, but no! It might be worth a look if it has the Chevy V-8 conversion, but otherwise, it's a real money pit! Sorry for the pessimism, but it takes owning one to understand the plight of the Jaguar owner! P.S. Jag parts are stratospherically costly! $120 to replace the glove box lock!!! Then months before it was sent to me because it had to be shipped to London to get re-keyed...and it took two tries by them to get it right!!!

..RUN>>>RUN>>RUn>>Run>>run...?
...you didn't even call me an A**Hole..I guess I'am losing it.
I heard a lot of bad stuff about Jags before I started buying them. When I asked"Did you own one or know anybody that did"? the answer was always "NO". -I heard similar stories about "Benz' owners, that their just Rich people trying to show off/More money then brains..etc. ..so I guess you have to consider the source. -But...why would you think FORD would IMPROVE any automaker that they aquired? -Didn't Ford have something to do with the Pinto..,Edsell<(sp)....FuZzY loGiC ? -Can I ask you,"If you blew up your MERCEDES engine, would you replace it with a CHEVY conversion"? I'am still LQQKING for that.... ....FANTAZMOBILE..you know..the one that never has a problem & runs on air.I heard they only made a few & their VERY hard to find. But seriously...I know what your saying,I think a lot of trouble stems from lack of maintainance, knowledge & buying a car based on it's "purrrty teeel color" In the 10yrs I've owned this partic-u-lar CAT,my over & above regular maintainance costs, extented to a new rad,($325 + $175 inst.)& a mirror control switch ($10.used -Like Mercedes...Jaguar's also have a network of enthusisats, able to assist & FLAME any & all. -Parts can be EXPENSIVE & they can be INEXPENSIVE..depends where you get them & from who (or is it Whom..)? I would never say that she's PUUURRRRRRRRR-fect..But handling,pick-up, blowing past snot nosed kids in their Mustang 5.0's,& Rice Rockets...well it just makes my a**h*** twitch. -I appreciate & respect DIEHARD Jag owners comments & I know,as do you,Jags are WAY- KEWL.Like a Benz..you WILL fall in love.. Re Jags
I always promised myself I would have a Jag by the time I was 40, my Grandad ran Jags in the 60's when I was a Kid, specifically MK 10's awesome cars, my Mother used to get down on her knees in the back seat when we went on the motorway, begging him to slow down !. Back in those days not too many cars could hit 100 never mind more. To keep them on the road he had a dealer shop forman in his back pocket. I remember ths guy took me out in a XJ6 series 2 when I was about 14, we were doing 100 on B roads like it was a Sunday drive.
He took me to work one day to show me the first XJS they had delivered. It was in the workshop for "pre delivery work". It was the derigour red, just like the press photos. I was stuck both by the lack of wood and the tiny back seat. Also in the shop was a brand new XJ6 series 2 with the roof caved in, it had "fallen" of the car transporter while being unloaded. It was being returned to Jaguar to be rebuilt, poor guy that had ordered it though, this was the days of 18 month waiting lists. The last tasty morsel he had to show me was the new TR7, again in pre delivery. Boy I loved that car, the pop up headlights were a hoot, the closest thing to them was italian exotics at that time. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I caved to all the bad comments from people when it came time to buy my dream car, so I picked the sensible choice instead, my 280CE, but one day, when money is no object I will buy my Jag, not a new one, but perhaps a series 1 or 3 XJ6 |

we had an 86 xjs v12. We had minor electrical problem but none that stopped the car from working, but the gas gauge had a mind of its own. At fulll tank it would read anywhere from empty to full, and would selectively choose its position on the gauge.
Other than that, the little trip computer thing never worked right. We had more mechanical problems, and had to get the top half of the engine rebuilt at only 35k miles, because one day it just started idling rough and lost power. Turned out to be valves, but with a car that was 8 years old at the time, which hadn't been driven much, things are abound to dry up or wear out form sitting. My friend has a 1991 XJS V12 with only 17k on it. IT had been sitting so much, he had to replace the gas tank, all the fuel lines, and just about every rubber hose, not to mention the brakes. Other than that, the car drives great, and has given any problems to him except for minor issues. When I had my MGB, it was chock full of lucas stuff, but it was reliable. I've heard horror stories from XJ6 owners though that had nothing but electrical problem after electrical problem. I guess it all just depends on luck in finding one that wasn't plagued by the Dark Price. Alon

I guess it comes down to how much you can put up with, I think most issues with Jags don't actually take them off the road, but are small annoyances.
The basic engines are all very strong, they may leak a little (or a lot), and the transmissions from about 75 are GM, so not probem there. These cars are not Toyota's, and due to there compexity and spotty build qualities things just happen. I think it is the price you pay to drive such a beautiful car. I guess the anology to a mistress is really true in the case of Jaguar. In comparison, I have read more horror stories about Italian exotics, I mean just the cost to tune a Ferrari is enough to make you cry, and they too suffer from dodgy electrical systems and fragile trim ect, but owners put up with it for the love of the car. And this is the reason I choose the Mercedes, almost as reliable as a Toyota (I can feel the flames now) and almost as desirable as a Jag :p IMHO |

re: jaguar sedans
the xj6 from aprox '91 utilised ford "overdrive" automatic transmissions.....it is MY belief that these ARE the weak (P.O.S.) link to these automobiles...probably the computer systems as well...best wishes always...spo

somewhere in the mix I think they used a ZF transmission after the launch of the XJ40.
For my personal selection, I would have to pick pre Ford Jaguars, they just seem to have lost their souls now. I mean the S Type while looking the part is based on the floor pan and modified engine of a Ford Mondeo which it also shares with the Lincoln Continental. |
