1989 420sel $6,000

Hey all,

I've been bouncing back and forth with the idea about selling or keeping my 420SEL and I've decided to relist it here, hoping a fellow enthusiast will have some interest. So here's the skinny:

EXTERIOR: Smoke Silver. Body is clean overall but needs some tidying. The paint is good, could definitely use a compound and wax though. It needs some bodywork in the following places:

-RF fender was slightly creased by some parking lot dodo. Hit and run accident. I would think hanging a new (or used) fender on would be the sensible thing to do rather than repairing this one and having to match the paint, etc..

-RR door was also creased slightly by the same accident. Not bad at all. Should be easily straightened. There are also two slight surface rust bubbles on this door. One by the plastic trim at the bottom and one by the handle.

-LR door has one surface rust bubble by the handle.

The rest of the panels are straight and clean. This was a Cleveland car from new so the rust is not too uncommon. The underside is very solid though, and I welcome any pre-purchase inspections. There is no accident history on the car and I can't find any evidence of bodywork anywhere.

INTERIOR: Parchment leather, good clean shape. Floormats (not carpets) are scruffy, but a new pair would make the interior great. Headliner, dash, wood and doorpanels are all as new. No rips in the leather anywhere.

ENGINE: Recent top end rebuild (valve job, guides, seals, timing chain, tensioner, upper rails and resealed intake). New injectors, water pump, belts, hoses, plugs, leads, cap & rotor and oil pressure sending unit. Recent new monovalve insert. Engine runs absolutely beautifully and doesn't use any oil. There is one leak though from the oil pan where it looks like it may have cracked (before I got the car). It's not too bad though. It looks like it was patched with epoxy or the equivalent?

TRANSMISSION: Perfect working condition. Shifts as it should. I changed the fluid and filter when I did the valve job.

TIRES: Newer Michelins, about 4,000 miles on them.

BRAKES: Recent complete front brake job (pads, rotors and repacked bearings). New rear pads. The rear rotors are still plenty thick.

OTHER: I just changed the oil. I changed the coolant with 50/50 MB type antifreeze and distilled water when I did the valve job. All electrical accessories work properly and the Becker radio works fine. I also put a new Hirschmann antenna mast on a couple months ago, also new MB wiper blades.

I bought this car from the original owner who was a doctor in Cleveland. Her 17 year old daughter drove this car until the chain broke and I bought it. I think the slight scruffiness is due to typical 17 year old carelessness but this car will respond beautifully to a good cleanup. Most importantly, it runs great and I've put 3,000 miles on it since I did the valves and have not had one single problem. Oh, before I forget, the A/C does need freon, not because it leaks but because I evacuated the system when I bought the car because I knew it would sit in my workshop for a while until I got around to rebuilding it. Also, the service book is stamped for every service to current by the dealer in Cleveland (Kopeke Mercedes-Benz). I'm asking $6,000 which I think is fair for a 105,000 mile car with a fresh top end job which can be driven daily as it is. The bodywork would be solely up to the purchaser. I took a bunch of good digital pics but since my upgrade to Win 2000, I am having trouble getting my camera to download them to my Photoshop program. But if you e-mail me, I should have everything going in a few days. You can also call me at (513) 519-7302 anytime.

Thanks for looking!

Here's a shot of the damage to the RR door. As you can see, it is not badly dented...
