What is a fair price on a 86-88 560SEL sedan ??

I have seen several 56OSEL's on E-Bay recently, selling at what seems to be very low prices. None in my area of course. The 56OSEL's around here- are $5000-8000- even with over 100K miles. I have seen 89 56OSEL's with no reserve sell as cheap as $3000 on E-Bay. What should be the most I should pay for a local 86-88 56OSEL? I do not want to pay over $5Ks for one locally, when they are all over E-Bay @ low prices. Seems like the 86-newer 56O's sell for less than the older 3OOSD's, with similar mileage. I guess more people want diesels. I found a local 86 56OSEL in EC for $6995. that I was considering, but after browsing E-Bay and seeing other 86-88s for as low as $3K in VGC- it seems crazy to pay that much for this car. If I do not find one of these locally @ a fair price, I will probably just search for a 81-85 3OOSD @ a good price. Seems to be more of those locally than the 56O's. I now wish I had of bought the local gray 1984 3OOSD in average to good condition for $15OO. They finally sold it and I see the new owner driving it all of the time. The lady that I now see driving it used to have another 3OOSD, about the same year, but it had its fair share of scrapes. Thanks for any information.

I sold my 87 560SEL for $2600. I only had 1 person interested because the AC wasn't working. I had bought it for $1300.

I sold my 85 380SE for $900. I had bought it for $400.

I'm in S. Cal and it seems like they are cheap out here.

Wow.... That is CHEAP. I would like to find one around here for that. I did find a 84 300SD for $1500, that I passed on, as I was suspicious something was wrong. Wish now I had of bought it, as I see a middle aged lady driving it. I see her at least twice a week- going down the road smoothly. Seems like it was a great running car, aside from the cosmetic issue. The only two local 560's I have found were both 86 560SEL's. One had 125K and unsure of the others mileage. One was $5500., and the other was $6995. Thanks again.

Here's what happened. On the 87 560SEL the guy had the plugs changed and they crossed two of the wires so the car was miss firing and smoking a little. The guy thought it needed major work so I got it pretty cheap. I didn't know it was the wires at the time, but I figured for $1300 I would take a chance. If it was major I could have always parted it out. Lucky for me it was just the wires. It needed brakes too. Cost $20 at Auto Zone for new pads.

On the 85 380SE it was due for a timing chain and they guy didn't want to mess with it. It ran OK, but needed cosmetic things. I cleaned it up and sold it to a small dealer.

In CA there are so many MBZ that need work so people want to get rid of them and move on. Especially, if the people go to the dealer for repairs and they see a 3-5k repair order they would rather put that money towards a new one.

This in one case where dealer gouging works in the favor of guys like us that can fix things.
