1986 190D alternative energy project
86 190D, automatic, black on tan. true mileage unknown, but probably 120k. runs great and doesn't smoke. currently needs rear brake work and right rear bearing. I bought it to convert to run on waste vegetable oil, but I haven't had the time/tools to repair the car.
Asking $2500 as is or $3200 converted to run on vegetable oil using a coolant powered heated auxiliary fuel system. feel free to email with any questions, Ken

Up North
the car is in VT. It comes with 2 snows in the trunk.
It has the 2.5L naturally aspirated inline 5 cyl. I have all new gaskets and filters, most of which already installed. all new fluids intact vaccuum system, transmission shifts smooth, exhaust is solid. body is decent, some bubbles and fading. The rear brakes need to be pressure bled. new pads and speedbleeders. The parking brake needs shoes and cable. It's registered and inspected until june 04. This vehicle has the factory diesel fuel tank (17 gallons?) mounted in the trunk. This would recieve a heat exchanger and be used for vegetable oil. A 5 gallon tank would be installed for diesel fuel, to be used during start up and shut down. Ken

brakes are good to go!
Brakes are now bled and work excellent! I'm mounting the 2 hakipalita snow tires on the front and having 2 new studded snows mounted on the rear as we speak!
My TDI VW is down dues to linkage porblems, so this will be my daily driver for a bit. Battery is a bit weak. Could be from only starting it to move it around my driveway for the last month. I'll have the battery checked out. Any recommendations for a good inexpensive battery for this beast just in case? Ken

If you can find the right battery for your application, then I would strongly recommend the Walmart battery.
They are cheap, come with a good warranty and provide good starting power. They are made by Johnson Controls, which I prefer to the other big maker, Exide. You probably won't see the right battery for your application on the shelf, but if you find a manager they can probably look for one and get it for you. They were able to find the correct battery for my '89 560 SEC. Is the veggie conversion something you put together, or is it the Greasel kit, or similar? Tom

conversion kit
I assemble my own kits, using similar principles as greasel and others. The majority of systems use a series of heat exchnagers powered by engine coolant (waste engine heat). I have installed 12 vegetable oil systems over the last 2 years in various diesel vehicles. I have logged over 20,000 miles on vegetable oil collectively thru the diesels I have owned and converted. Besides for this mercedes, I have a 97 Passat TDI running on vegetable oil. You really can't tell the difference, except for the light smell of french fries, and the money you save running on free fuel!
If anyone wants info on running diesels on vegetable oil, feel free to contact me. The 190D isn't converted yet. I'm planning on converting the main tank to hold vegetable oil by installing a heat exchanger in it, and having a 5 gallon diesel tank for startup and shut down.

battery
Just installed a new battery in the 190D! It is an autocraft titanium, with 850CCA. The previous battery was a 9 year old Diehard, which served its time.
The car starts much better. It dropped to 0F last night. This AM I started the car at around 10F without plugging it in! It did take a few tries and a couple of glow cycles, but fired right up. This tank has been doing great pulling up my snowy dirt mountain road thanks to the studded snows. Go german engineering! ken

project underway
I started the vegetable oil conversion today. Just recieved a question about this, so here is a brief explanation:
the diesel engine will burn vegetable oil properly, provided the oil is heated to at least 70C. We use coolant powered heat exchangers to heat the straight vegetable oil (SVO) in an auxillary tank. The original diesel tank is still functional. Electric valves are used to switch between fuel sources. Engine is started an shut down on diesel. Vegetable oil is used when oil is heated. The book " from the fryer to the fuel tank" by Josh Tickell gives a good overview of biofuels and how to use them. The internet also has lots of info. feel free to ask more questions, Ken ps. I've been running my 97 TDI Passat on vegetable oil most of this winter, in temps below 0F!
