Thumbs up I need a turbo-diesel!

Finally got the OK from the wife to buy an old diesel mercedes. I'm looking for a turbo diesel, preferably a 300d. Must be a good runner, but I can take care of minor issues if need be. I'm in NW Indiana, but will travel if I find the right car. I'm looking for one around $2000, but would like to spend less, if possible. Minor rust, non-functioning windows, etc. don't bother me.

Look online at

collectorcartrader.com...also try the classifieds in the MBCA magazine The Star, which you can access from their website.

If you don't mind travelling for a good, rust free car, I was tipped off here to check the on-line classifieds of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Southern, rust-free cars, generally owned by better-off people who maintained them.

In Hemmings Motor News each month is an ad from Paul Padgett in Cincinatti, who has been flogging diesel "drivers" in the midwest for a long time.

Good luck!

The search is the best part. I wish I was really looking again. Some advice that was given to me that I wish I would have listened to a little bit more was to take your time. I think you can get a very nice example of one of these cars for 2-3k. Drive as many as you can. Read all the posts you can find about what to look for.

I've actually been looking since the first of december. I've been watching all of the classified sites, gone to look at "a great runner in great shape" and had a deal struck to buy one and have it delivered. I drove around 3 hours to see the "great runner in great shape", to find a rusted out 300SD that the greaseball used car salesman couldn't even get to fire. Sure it was about -10 and the battery was about 15 years old, but the way it was described I was reall dissapointed. It was kind of funny to see the salesmans face when I told him to forget it - I had talked him to $2300 cash, which he knew I had in my pocket! The one I made a deal to buy and have delivered, was a 300D turbo, from georgia a year or so ago. Dealt with the guy over the phone, set a price for the car & delivery, & set a preliminary delivery time of the next weekend - 6-7 days away. the next weekend came with no car, and I couldn't even get a hold of the guy. Finally almost two weeks later he calls and asks how I wanted to handle the title transfer. I told him to bring it to me, I'd give him cash, then he'd give me the title. He wanted me to send him money for the car & delivery up front, then started some speal about its a 20+ year old car and it won't be perfect so he wanted to make sure I bought it rather than have him bring it to me & have me decide I didn't want it. My radar started going off listening to him go on and I told him to forget it. If he'd asked for the money when we'd made the original deal, I'd probably of sent it just to get the car here, but after almost two weeks of not being able to get a hold of him - no way. I'm hoping someone on here has got a second car, that isn't perfect, but still decent. I work seven days a week, so I can't really devote much time to traveling around to look. But I'm sure I want a 300d and will buy one soon.

Also, while my budget for a cash-only deal is less than 2k, if anyone wanted to do the barter thing I am an architectural designer, and would be willing to do some design work and then pay some if it meant picking up a nicer car. So if anyone is planning on doing a new house and has a car to move, let me know.

Jeremy, I'm in Ft. Wayne, IN and I have seen a couple cars on cars.com or autotrader.com. I called about 4 different people yesterday because I was looking for maybe an SD for my mom but I think I found a 420SEL instead. I think on cars.com is a 1979 300SD listed to be in good condition for $1700, w116's are prone to rust. That's what I have and are by far the best. Anyways, good luck with the search and I will let you know if I see anything interesting around.
Thanks
David

Would you drive to California? Does it have to be a turbo? I am going to look at a 1980 300d tomorrow. Why? Because I am always on the lookout for a diamond in the rough, and I am kind of looking for a parts car for my 300. Seller is asking 1300, but needs to sell soon. The guy is selling for his mom who is 2nd owner and owned for 8 years. Supposedly has all service records for the life of the car. ~200k miles.

California would probably be to far. I did find a 83sd with a new engine in texas, which may be just what I'm looking for. I have to call them, to see what the details are.

There is one in this area that is still available. Has some rust under the battery area that looked pretty substantial from what I could tell without removing the battery.
