On a scale of 1-10, 10 being difficult for the DIY. How hard is it to install the bracing?

You need:
* Floor jack.
* Jack stands.
* Special MB coil spring tool.
* Grinder to cut away the old one.
* Excellent welding skills.

This is a TEN because it is SAFETY...
Making a grinding or welding mistake here can cause death...

Actually, the MB recommended replacement procedure calls for the new spring perches to be riveted in, not welded. A total of 11 high strength rivets are called for on each perch (four on each "ear" and three in the middle). I believe these are the same location that the spot welds were done at the factory originally but apparently they are now calling for the rivet connection not the spot weld. The procedure is detailed in the WIS as AR62.10-P-0006E. It calls for a "Taurus 4 blind rivet tool" and "100mm extension" as being the recommended riveter.

Once you grind off the old perch do you need to reinforce the frame before you rivet on the new perch? Assuming that part of the frame will suffer from rust damage as well........

If the body metal is damaged, it must be repaired.
Some owners choose to reinforce the area, the MB FSM does not cover the question.

Taurus 4 is on MBUSA Standard equipment list. This is probably why it is called out in AR62.10-P-0006E.
I think there may be other hydraulic riveters that may be able to do the job.
That said I'm looking to purchase a used Taurus 4 or rent one for a weekend :)

AR62.10-P-003EC Check spring mount at front left and right

MB's official procedure calls for replacing mounts if corrosion is severe, if once removed you find that corrosion of the left/right longitudinal member(frame) is severe, the the whole section must be replaced. They do sell the entire section with the spring mount already attached.

Does anyone know the part # for the complete repair kit mentioned above?

I believe it's 2106202467 but I can't get a confirmation from Pelican. The item can't be returned.
Thanks a lot

Striker plate installation

Has anyone found good instructions on replacing the striker plate that already has the spring out attached? It'd looks as though it's riveted in but I can't find which rivets or how many are required, or anything about placement. Is the existing panel welded in? If so, how would I remove it.

Also found great instructions for installing just the perch (not the perch reinforcement). That's tech document AR62.10-P-0006E. Unfortunately, the part number for the perch is not given. What's shown there is NOT the reinforcement which is part 2106260119. There is a part called a "covering" which is part number 2106202567. The MB diagrams are not clear enough to make a determination. For example, their illustration of the striker plate doesn't look at all like the photograph though the past number is the same. So I don't trust the illustration of the "cover" to be accurate either.

Strike Plate, Spring Perch

My driver's side spring perch finally gave way. I cut out the beat up spring perch using a grinder and dremel cutting wheel. I also grinded out a small hole of rust and cleaned up the work area with a metal polishing wheel. I then primed the area and got it ready to install the strike plate.

The area is in good shape, less the small area of rust, and that is why I decided on the strike plate. Had there been more and wider rust issues, I would have bought the repair plate and installed it.

The stealer in my area wanted $1850 to do the work...spare me please! Thus, I was motivated to do it all myself. Nobody in my area would weld it, so I am committed to Riveting in in. The stealer told me that it would take 40 rivets! Thats a lot of Rivets, but I have them ready to install. Others have successfully used the pneumatic 1/4" rivet gun from Harbor Freight to install the MB rivets and have said its easy and the least of worries. Drilling the holes for the rivets is the real work.

Thats a lot of Rivets to put on this strike plate and common sense will help you figure it out along with the photo above. It will be very secure when I am done. I am also changing out the Springs and Shocks after I install the strike plate/spring perch.

I am taking photos of my progress and plan to give peach parts a good write up on this and hopefully this will help other DIYers. This is my weekend to get it all done and get my Benz back on the road.
