I wish

Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable than myself will verify my statement, but I believe that Mercedes did not produce diesel automobiles in 98 or 99. They were busy retooling their factories for the new CDI diesels, which we will not be able to purchase here in the states for a long time to come.

Check out traderonline.com. You can search based on model, hear, cost and distance from the zipcode you enter.

I play there a lot, and waste a lot of time daydreaming

I think the 98/99 will carry a E300TD model. I also remember some members here have one. It's turbocharged (the 96 wasn't) and fast (the 96 isn't) so you've picked well.

I've got one, but you can't have it.

Jim - please be careful on your nomenclature. This model is properly called an E300 TurboDiesel, not E300TD. A T in the badge means station wagon, not turbo.

Having gotten that out of the way, you can see by my signature line that I have the 99 version of this beauty, so they definitely were made. Only 98 and 99 were turbocharged in the U.S. Mine currently has 38,000 miles.

I have an aunt & uncle in Orlando who have a white 98 with 29,000 miles that they may be willing to sell. I'll check on that. In addition, I've posted a message to a eMail list of owners of these cars. If anything comes up, I'll post it here as well as eMail Bob.

Rick, you are correct. Also, our 96 is an E300 Diesel, not an E300D as my signature line says

Rick, I'm jealous! When we bought the 96 we didn't know much about MBs. Next time it'll be a 98/99, and since that will be a few years down the road the price will be a bit lower. Until then we still have a fine W210.

BTW, a TraderOnline search for E300TD will get you both the older "T" station wagons and newer Turbodiesels and E300D will give you a similar mix of old and new.

Best of luck to bobtaylor, and call 'em what you will they're still great!

Oop, I still didn't QUITE get it

300D or 300TD finds older models, E300D or E300TD finds newer. Sheesh, now I'm correcting myself.

'99 Diesel

I have a '99 E300 Turbodiesel in silver with gray leather
and 47k miles. I also have the extended dealer warranty to 100k miles. I am not looking to sell but may consider it. Seems these cars are selling for about $50k or so on the market. What did you have in mind.

1998-99 Diesel

Bob,

They did make E300 Turbodiesels in 1998 and 1999...a buddy just bought one.....1998 white/beige(lease return) with 58K
for $34,900 in Dallas Texas.....even with lower mileage 35-40K...I bet you could find one in the upper 30 range...the cars were only 46-47K sticker brand new...and by the way the car is EXTREMELY fast for a diesel automobile

Info and Dumb Question

Two things:

1. Last Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, a good friend and colleague of mine was one row and three seats apart from me on a flight on United. His discussion on a two hour flight was with an executive from Chrysler. I own diesel two MBenz cars, so my friend said I would be interested in what the Chrysler man told him. It was, essentially, that they (whoever they are, this week!) were going to start putting a diesel Mercedes on the market in America again because the demand was there. Personally, I just hope it's an S-class model. And, they plan to put the Daimler Benz diesel engine into Dodge trucks sometime in the forseeable future. I commented they would have to bore them out or some such thing, but I am NOT a mechanic nor anything close, so I am in over my head at this point.

2. I own an '86 and '87, both 300SDLs. My buddies who are S-class owners say that the last S-class diesel was in 1994. I believe this to be accurate. I have become accustomed to my S-class luxury and functionality and prefer NOT to "step down" to an E-class. Now that you E-class owners are really angry at me, kindly tell me the substantive differences, other than price? My '87 is supposed to arrive any day now and it has 45k one-owner miles so will last me a good ten years if I am lucky, but someday I will need another diesel and my dearly beloved wife thinks $50k is what we are supposed to pay for houses, not cars!

Thanks,

Kent

DrT:
You do NOT want a 94 350SD. They are exceptional cars, but their engines are notorious for bending rods and needing rebuilds. I may be telling you information that you already know.

From what I have heard on the Chrysler corporate website, they plan on putting Mercedes-Benz diesels into their Ram trucks starting in 2003. Additionally, you can now get a Mercedes diesel in several Freightliner semi trucks.

Thanks, Ben!

Ben,

Thank you. I had heard that previously. My basic plan was to drive my '86 till it dropped (maybe 500k?) but then I got the opportunity to buy the '87 with only 45k miles I could not say no. I drove 35k last year, so at 45k it will take me seven or eight years to hit 295k where my '86 is now, so I will probably not be in the market for another one for quite awhile. However, you would not believe the friends and relatives who get interested in MBenzs once they hear how well mine runs, the low initial cost, etc. Therefore, maybe somebody else will want one soon.

Which years for the 300SD are worth owning?

Keep thinking,

Diesel S-class

Kent,

1995 was the last year for S-Class diesels called 300SD in 1992-1993 and S350 in 1994-1995.....S-class cars are great in any year.I would argue that the 140 is the most engineered benz ever. And probably the most expensive to maintain
As for the engine problems of the 1990-1995..its true...but if you get one thats already had the engine rebuilt/replaced by a dealer you should be fine for 500K.
I own a 1992 300SD that has had the engine replaced(warranty) at the MB dealer and therefore was put in to another 48/50 warranty. If you check with owners of these 1990-1995 diesels that had engine problems(and not all did ) you will find that once the engine was "repaired" with what amounts to beefier and modified parts there were no further problems....but I would advise as with any later S class(140) ..EXTEND THE WARRANTY!!!!...because after an evaporator core($3000) or a closing assist pump($1000) you will be glad you did...and these are very common repairs on the latter S-class cars...good luck

I wasn't aware that they produced a 300SD in 92 and 93. I thought it was a 350 from 1989 on. I guess I learn something every day. Perhaps if Mercedes follows through and exports a diesel to the U.S. it will be the S400 CDI. Now that is a car I would love to own.

Kent, you are quite lucky to have found such a low mileage 87 300SDL. That was the last year they produced the 300SDL with a W126 chassis, and I am a big fan of the 126s. If I every come across such an 87 300SDL and happen to have any spare money (or any hope of obtaining money in the near future) I would happily buy it.
