Unhappy NEED water pump for '86 300E NOW! Help!

I need a new water pump for my '86 300E, but the real problem is that I have no where close to enough money to pay for this to get done. My macanic quotes about $720 for the whole project. Please if anyone knows where to find a good working pump for less money, or that can help me try to install it, let me know asap. Even if you just know what all need to come out to get the new pump in. Thanks

I think your mechanic is ripping you off. A rebuilt waterpump is something like $120. I had a waterpump put in by a mechanic on my 300 and it was close or around 300 total with the part.

If your mechanic is charging $720 to replace a waterpump, and a rebuilt unit is $120.. thats $600 he's using for "labor".

Given that the average mechanic would ask for something like $75 per hour... he's saying it takes 8 hours to do this replacement.

Here's an ebay auction for a water pump.

there are some model number info comments on a web site I checked for pricing, specifically:
" For models with engine serial number from 10-018294 (M/T) and 12-268716 (A/T). Also need 1032001452 pipe and 1245013382 hose for models before engine serial number splits if original pump on engine. Also may need 0119972448 and 0129975148 pipe o-ring seals, as well as 1032001452 pipe and 1245013382 lower hose."

Good thing to give your VIN# to the supplier so they can provide these additional parts so you can complete the job. I hate to get 50% thru a job, start installing the part and find that some additional parts are necessary to use the new part. This is fairly common in many vehicles, not only MB's.

And putting a new belt on the car might be in order, then there's the belt tensioner... oh I remember, you're on a budget.
