If you look at the door striker you'll see a small yellow or black "tougue" that sticks out towards the door itself. 99 times out of 100 this it what fails and causes your door to not close properly. The yellow ones are plastic and crack- the black ones are rubber and last longer. I have this individual parts if you just need these. You have to slide the inside black larger rubber piece out and you'll see how this mechanism works and is put together. I can also get if I do not have a door striker if you need the whole thing- but not until monday's mail.

Another striker
lldanj,
I met you at North Fork last May and you were kind enough to give me your old antenna, which is now part of my working antenna system! Thank you. I guess what goes around, comes around. I am also looking for a striker, but for a 1984 300 SD. The black rubber piece is probably all I need, but I will buy either if anyone has one. My driver's door isn't shutting well and I suspect this piece. If anyone has one, my email is daniel_fernandez@csumb.edu, since I check that more frequently than this site. Thanks. Dan |

Can the black rubber piece be installed if the broken plastic tab is removed? Is just that rubber piece a spared part that we can get? I could use 4 actually. All 4 doors of my wagon will not hardly close anymore, and that plastic insert piece is cracked/broken/destroyed on all to varying degrees......
Is the removal/replacement technique sensitive???

Remove the striker from the door. The female hardware has catches so when you remove the allen bolts the females stay there BTW, they dont fall down inside the door. Now look at the back/inside of the striker; the rubber pulls out and you'll see the remains of the yellow plastic or black more like rubber tongue. Insert the new tongue into the metal, then the rubber into the metal. The rubber has a metal guide plate in the back which secures it to the frame. I used to collect the tongues when I saw them... been slacking. I have only one now. I don't know part numbers or availiblity, sorry.

If anyone would consider selling me a door striker for a 77 300d 123 chassis I am in sore need of one for both the driver and passenger front doors. my occupants find it necessary to slam the doors every time they get in and have accelerated the damage to the point where the doors will not latch so I have to listen to the wind whistle instead of the radio as I drive these days.
I would greatly appreciate it, shrineman@gmail.com |

trying something new
I am field testing something new to band aid fix this.
I applied some ruberized roofing tile caulk to the "nub" area, where the black rubber pieces sticks out and operates the locking mechanism. So far is has stuck fairly well and helped ease the slamming requirement. I will give it another month, and then if it has worked out, I will post this bit of genious on the Diesel Board.
