617.950 what's it worth?
I'm seriously considering parting out my '79 300SD as ever new corner I find more body cancer. I love this car, but may have to cut my losses rather than sinking more money into what could become a very deep money pit.
The engine has 245K miles but runs absolutely perfectly with almost no blowby. I was amazed as it's even better than my 300TD with only 215K miles on it. So anyway, was just curious what the entire longblock + accessories might be worth. The transmission is also in good condition as well (722.1xx). Feel free to express a going rate and/or interest. it will be worth more in the car cause you can show it running and people can see the miles. I'd pay $500 or so for it. I actually need an engine for my '80 near rustfree sd... but I'm hoping to find one cheap. there are so many of those engines around, that lowers the value some. the 6 cylinders are more expensive. you can also check www.car-part.com to compare what scrapyards ask for their engines...

At this point I wouldn't sell the car whole as it's probably worth more than $500 in parts. despite the rot, the interior is actually in ok condition. Of course this guy : http://www.alabbasi.net/450SEL.htm is a true inspiration, though he's got the 6.9 pimped out 450SEL and not the slightly more common SD model.

I sometimes part out cars and I usually get alot of calls for the 116 chassis, the engine is probably worth 500 if it has good compression and oil pressure, however when you add up all the other pieces in the car. I'll bet if parted it out you could make 1600, maybe more maybe less, Selling it whole, a rusty SD, $600-700...

I paied something around $700 for my good 617.950 with a bit less milage.
