trade for a 1981 300D non turbo engine...
Trade for a complete drop in 300D non turbo. I have a 1982 300D Turbo in the car now. I bought this car with the wrong engine in it. The turbo diesel has 105,000 miles and runs good. Need to put the correct engine in car so transmission will shift properly. I also have an extra 300Turbo engine for parts(cracked #2 Sleeve, pitted head. but complete and dissassembled.)

Just pulled a 5 cyl non-turbo from a euro spec 300D yesterday. Really. It's still hanging on the engine hoist! About 165k on it, runs great, sent you a PM.

Dang, wish you were closer, I'd say C'mon over and we'd drive each other's cars so we could see we both have good engines and then trade...

Hi Jim;
I have a 722.118 4 speed auto. It will not shift into 4th gear. the other gears shift hard, but do shift. I was told by MBUSA my car was built with a non turbo, and that the current engine 617.952 turbo is not compatible with that tranny. If you know any ways around this without changing the engine I would like to know. thanks for the interest. den |

I'm not sure about the answer you got from MB. You should be able to make the transmission shift up no matter which engine is bolted to it in my opinion.
I'm wondering if you just have a transmission problem.

Hi Jim,
My transmission does not have a Bowden cable. The only connection between the engine and transmission is the adjustable vacum modulator. The vacum is supplied from the fuel pump vacum solinoid. No throttle connections on the transmission. I had the car to a transmission shop and he said my transmission was junk. I put in a good used one from a nonturbo car and no difference. That is when I gave MBUSA the VIN, they said my car was a non turbo. I bought it as a turbo, and was told the engine was bad, which it was so I replaced it with another Turbo diesel. Then it went to the tranny shop, then I was told I have wasted alot of time and money... den |

Wonder if there was any change in the layout for the shift linkage between the transmission and lever during the work? Is the torque converter the one that came with the transmission? I have more questions than answers in regards to your issue but feel that if the transmission is not going into high gear then it is more of a transmission issue than the "wrong engine" BS.

Adjusted shift linkage twice, checked the detent response to the shift lever position, it is correct.
Adjusted the modulator best I can, it does not do the right thing because the amount of vacum it creates is in opposition to the amount needed to shift. I work on concrete mixer trucks with electronic modilators and mechanical modulator cables, so I have some familiarity with this. The 722.118 Trans. for a non turbo is controlled by vacum as best as I can tell. The engine I have, OM617.952 needs to be converted to a OM617.912. It has been a long and frustrating experience which began last june. Den |

Change trannies. Put one in that is compatable with the turbo engine......I'm thinking 4 spd manual, but any auto out of a turbo should work

Hi Jack;
The proper transmission for a turbo diesel is bigger and has a mechanical control off the fuel pump. In order to change to a turbo trans. I would have to change: mounts, control linkage, modify driveline, etc... Speaking to an independent lifelong MB tech he told me to put the right engine in, it would be less work and less money if you can swap the turbo for a non turbo. den |

It can and does, I only swapped out the engine (and necessary brackets/hoses) in my 80, all else is original.

Hi Chris,
You say a 240 will fit into a 300? Can you tell me if my transmission (722.118) will work with a 240? If so what in the mounting of the engine is different? thanks den |
