It's $500 now on the MB site and that's converted from Euros. I found one for $200 in January of last year and I am still quite eager to see the car complete!

That price is not surprising.

If you want the real thing that may be the way to go if you are in a hurry.

I got mine by buying a euro three hundred parts car.

When I did my second stick conversion on the cd I didn't want to pay that price though and the 240 fw works just fine for us.

Only $665.50 for the flywheel (A 617 030 00 05), $223.98 for the clutch pressure plate (A 004 250 32 04), etc. from the dealer here in Tacoma. You'd be into it over $1,000 buying all parts new, eek. And they have to come from Germany.

I'll probably just throw a 200D-240D flywheel and pressure plate in my fintail and call it good. If it still idles fine and makes the car take off faster, then I am all for it.

Hi, I have read every thing avalable in english on the net about this, and one site -unimog dieselization explains it best,, you have to mark your auto flywheel before taking it off-because it is balanced to the motor, then you have to take it and the 5 cyl stick flywheel to a suitable facility that does dynamic balancing----- Ant then you have to make damn sure they understand what you want---anyone that keeps talking about zero balancing DOES NOT GET IT. what you are trying to accomplish is finding the heavy side of the spinning mass--like the opposite of when a wheel is on abalancing machine--then make sure they find the heavy side of the spinning mass of the stick flywheel, then you bolt it on so that the heavy est part -spot goes back on in the exact same position---There are 12 ways to bolt on a benz flywheel--and 11 of them are wrong

you can zero balance and still get it right.....

1. MARK ORIGINAL FLYWHEEL AND CRANK BEFORE YOU REMOVE IT
2. zero balance original by removing material
3. zero balance new
4. mark orientation of the new so you have material to remove
5. transfer balance removal of original to OPPOSIT side of the new. (drill same diameter and depth hole at 180 to original)
6. install with mark on new flywheel matched to mark on crank

BTW, my original was off by 18 grams. most will tell you they are zero balanced but mine was definitely not this translated to 2-3/8x3/8dp holes

So it doesn't really matter if it's a new one or a used one, or a custom one? You'll need to have all this done just to do a flywheel? To each his own, but it sounds gruesome to me.
It's all pretty impressive the time they take on some of this stuff, and it's the typical Mercedes "extra mile". It's nice, but it's not like an old diesel is ever going to run smooth anyway, hence the importance of an extensive external balance. The same type of balancing can be done to any car, and all the same issues are true of all makes and models with a flywheel. It's all just a nice way of saying the engine isn't balanced so to get it to run right they harmonize on the outside. Audi does it too and if you get anything other than the monstrous dual-mass it makes all kinds of racket. No matter how flawless the flywheel is. Whereas the gas Benz engines seem to be a whole lot better in that regard.

However, those prices brand new? Aren't any worse than my TT! I thought they were unobtainium, I didn't realize you guys are just cheapskates.

The monsterous duel mass--thats why I thought that--if anyone trys to tell you -Zero Balance--Turn and walk away with your $700.00 35 lb'r because it is designed to balance by being O-O-B in the right spot--I thought you were uninvited to visit! lol
