Since its from an '84 I'm going to guess Celsius though.

If you hold it just right, you can see the outline of the F to the right of the display (light source is important here, twisted-nematic display. You're looking for the reflective/conductive GTO coating on the 2nd surface).

There are five wires, two brown(grounds), a green(signal from sensor), and two others that, one is the back light and the other is the power. If you ground the brown wires, and give power to the other two you'll find out if it's F or C.

Just for reference the probes are the same for a C gauge and a F gauge so the probe doesn't matter. All the magic happens in the display.

Speedo drive. It will delay temperature changes when the car is stopped (upgrade).

I can't see even the slightest hint of an outline......I tried all angles with a couple light sources.....its just perfectly smooth....not like your average calculator screen.

I don't have any wires.....all I have are pins 1-4....which pins do I give power/ground to to power this thing up?

C or F?

The farenheit displays are enclosed. You can not see the circuit board. On the Celcius you can see the board. You have a Celcius.
Important to test them for graphics. Even with a perfect screen.
I have sold thirty of these displays this year. Fortunately almost all were perfect except two. Part of the graphics in those did not work.
I have fashioned a makeshift harness with a pickup for testing. No problems now.

If this one doesn't work I'd be glad to take it back and give a refund....the circuit board does indeed show on the bottom, so its a Celsius unit.

There are two grounds.
2-Brown-Ground. One comming from the probe and the other going to the ground behind the cluster.
1-Green-stemp signal from probe.
1-Black/Red or Black/Purple ignition power.
1-Black or Grey/Blue power for backlight.

I got it, pulled a harness from a junkyard car and tested it, it seems to work fine and it is a C model.
