W123 Euro Tail Light assembly For Sale
Left side only. It has the amber going around the corner instead of turning to red. That's the only difference I could see. It's in great shape...no cracks etc. Complete less the bulbs (BYOB) Pictures available if interested.

IIRC Euros don't have chrome on the strip below the lens, like the US 230 and 240D.

And, not correct. Both my 280E euros have the chrome trim. Jim

Came standard on the more expensive models.
Chrome piece is the fastest way to tell if you are following a 240D or 300D in the states. I like chrome, I want Chrome. I have a 240d. Will people think I'm pretentious? I had never noticed my car lacked amber lenses. I knew there was something wrong with the look, but I never put my finger on it. I've had several; VW and Audis and they all had amber turn indicators on the rear lights. Anyways; those certainly look to be in good condition, but I don't know what I'd do with one. Probably go crazy looking for the 2nd one. Did those come off a car with 2 left sides???

I had a euro 78 300D w/4 speed. Black below the taillights. Both my previous 81 280E and my current 82 280E, both euros, have the chrome trim. Not sure about my 79 280TE, (euro, natch) the chrome trim below those taillights looks suspiciously like a bumper.... Put it on a 240D? Sure, I did on two different ones. Nice, quick, just a few fasteners per side. This one is unusual in that the trunk side of the lens assembly has NOT been drilled for a side marker light. The "usual" grey market trick was to spray some red paint inside the taillight and cut in a side marker bulb. If you look closely at a one of these modified lenses, you will be able to see the original amber color to the outside of the red finish on the inside of the lens. Jim

The variations in tail light lens colors, side markers, reflectivity etc. is hard to keep up with. I've been reading up on the web and now I understand better.
For awhile I thought I might have "faulty memory syndrome". All my European cars have had amber somewhere on the tail lights, but US regs required red rear side markers or reflectors, after 1970. Now that I've gone out to look at my car I can see that mine are like the other one in your picture, ie terminating in red. Anyway, I'm not into red/clear/smoked tail lights. To me the more and brighter the amber the better I like it. The 1984 Audi 5000 had particularly bright and alluring amber. But the lower portion was red, thereby satisfying DOT requirements. In regard to the rear chrome strip, all US 123 sedans and Coupes had them, except the 240D. I've noticed a lot more variation in Europe though, so I'm guessing it might have beeen a stand alone option on some models. I don't recall ever seeing a 280E without them, though. Everything you ever wanted to know about vehicle lighting, but were affraid to ask can be found in this Wikipedia article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_lighting I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I thought others might find the reasons for all the variations interesting as well. Consider it a "bump".

If we put Euro tails on a US W123, we will have a side-marker bulb that becomes useless. So the question is: Do we install a double-terminal socket - tapping from the side marker - and have the amber on constantly at night, or just use the amber lense for turn signal only? It might look kind of "big riggy" with an amber tail - although most likely illegal.
