FS: 85 Turbo OM617 diesel engine - $500

Well, plans change and it's time to move on. Time to sell my OM617 engine. It's on a cart now (indoors), just waiting to be put to good use again.

This engine came out of a 1985 300D with 163k miles on the clock. Both engine and transmission ran very well. Transmission was always serviced and has no delays. The engine has 163,000 miles with a recent service. Valve adjustment, new glow plugs, etc. etc. etc.

I'm in Chicago. You come with $500 cash, we'll load it up on your truck, trailer, van, or whatever you come by with. I have a lift so no backbreaking work. I can also deliver for what I think is a reasonable fee. Delivery also depends on how far.

$500 buys the engine and trans. No stories, just an engine that I don't need.

You can PM me here or send me an email: bsmuwk@yahoo.com

Allen

TRANSMISSION AND TORQUE CONVERTER HAVE BEEN SOLD! ENGINE W/ 163K MILES STILL AVAILABLE! $500

Would you be willing to sell just the transmission and torque converter? Is it 100% leak free? How much? I could pick it up........I would need to swap the speedo setup though, as I have a 300SD with the electronic speedometer.

I am just up in MI and would come pick it up. They fit nicely in the trunk of a W123/W124/W126.

How's $300 for the trans and torque converter?

No leaks. This trans likes to keep it's vital juices inside of itself. The instrument cluster is in a different car. Which you can see to verify mileage, but the other car needs the cluster so I don't know what you want to do with that.

The '85 in question is a Federal version. The Federal's got the regular 722.315. The Cali's got the 722.416.

the other question arises:

How can you use any trans from '85 on an earlier model if the '85 has the vacuum amplifier as its vacuum signal source source?

The transmissions are basically the same (with a little modulator adjustment differences). The way the vacuum is presented to the modulator is different.

The early turbo models had a direct vacuum source from the main line to the modulator with a Vacuum Control Valve in the middle to leak down the pressure. A high vacuum of 10-15 inches leaks down to zero at a full throttle position. So a modulator WITH vacuum softens the shifts at a low throttle response and a modulator with NO or LITTLE vacuum firms up the shifts when more throttle is given. This is predicated only on throttle position and no other variables.

On the 1984 California version, MB started tweaking for better shifting with the introduction of a simple form of the vacuum transducer. Then they took it a step further on '85 models with a system that takes into account of boost pressure with the use of the vacuum transducer. The system now starts off at 12-17 inches to the modulator and only leaks down five inches when full throttle travel is given. When the boost goes up, the boost gets into the vacuum system and lowers the vacuum in the lines to zero. This achieved a more precision vacuum allocation on the different power curve then just relying only on throttle position. It provided smoother shifting no matter how much power your putting out, yet keeping the transmission the same as the previous years.

Yeah its a 722.315....it will work fine, but will probably shift like an '82 instead of an '85. All I need to do is swap the tail-housing between my existing one and this one....
