That's not true, they have 120 days or so to pull parts off of the car.

I believe it's 180 day's.

Rules are specified, but does anyone really believe the junkyard is gonna crush a clunker if there are salvagable parts left on it? I rather doubt the "clunker police" are gonna be searching the yards for over the alotted time clunkers.

As long as the dealers destroy the engine, I gotta feeling everything else will be up for grabs until no more money can be made on the parts.

No, you were partially right. Most dealers are selling the clunkers to scrap yards, NOT salvage yards. Most clunkers around here are going in the crusher immediately, just like you said. The dealers are selling to scrap yards because they get more money from it AND ... they don't want competition for parts. Aren't you glad we're bailing these guys out?

I have heard of a few clunkers that end up in junkyards. I've heard of FAR more ending up in the crusher right away. And the dealers are indiscriminate between a trashy old van and a solid-bodied Mercedes. No one cares whether the car's parts might be of use to someone else. Believe me, this program wasn't designed to help anyone other than automakers.

Sad, that car qualifies, according to KBB's calculator. It would have to have pretty high mileage to qualify...between 150 and 200k, and be in "Fair" condition.

It only qualifies if the purchaser of the new car had the car for at least the prior year and it was registered and insured - proof is required. This one looks like it does not meet those two requirements.

Man, I would like those wheel center caps, and I've got to believe there is a market for that steering wheel.

Jimmy --- I saw the car again on Tuesday morning before meeting Tyler; it was pretty much intact. Do you want the center caps??? Tell me quickly --- I'm out the door in about 28 minutes.

The steering wheel looks much nicer in the pics; On Tuesday, I notice the wooden part has the "wood splitting" appearance. A couple of folks have PM'ed me about it, but no one has offered me money to go get it for them.

These "late" model MB's and BMW's are disposable cars. Maintaining one like this S600 is silly expensive......
Not sure if that's true, or at least what's happening here...there are a lot of gassers in the junkyard being parted under the c4c program. Engines are destroyed, but it seems that they're allowing the car to be parted still.
