Sorry to muck up this fine site. I am a rookie who has a 93 300D (2.5 turbo) whose engine let go at a mere 219k. All of the requisite maintenance done, to no avail - was hoping for another 225k minimum. I invested a tidy sum of money to fix the disrepair from a previous owner, and loathe to let her go.
Mechanic said the 5th cylinder is gone (which drives the oil pump?) and the cost to rebuild would be very expensive.
If anyone knows where I can get a gently used engine I would deeply appreciate the word.

Thanks for that info. As I indicated I am not at the novice level (far below). Will a 603 6 cyl fit without having to perform expensive alterations? What years would I be looking for?

603 will fit no problem. It was an option in 1987 in the U.S. market. The are also in 86-87 126 bodies.
