Marketing! Marketing! Marketing!

Seriously though, I'll wager that I have the finest shop rags in the country! Here in New England and particularly out here on the Cape the tradition of Yankee frugality still runs deep. As a result almost every town at its dump/transfer station has a place where people can leave items that while unwanted by their original owners are still useful and might be needed by others, these places are usually called "The Swap Shop" or "The Treasure Chest" etc. It's really the first step in the recycling stream, and it effect removes a huge pile of stuff from the waste stream of the town.

Each town has a recycling committee or something similar and they run or coordinate these operations providing volunteers to unload cars and trucks, sort the stuff and keep things moving efficiently. At the one closest to where I live I usually stop by each weekend, and once a month or so I'll drop off a dozen or two donuts. In return the ladies who run the operation divert from the flow any nice clean and absorbent cotton napkins, place mats, or non-terry cloth hand towels as well as an occasional table cloth of the same material type! So most weekends there is at least a shopping bag or two full of this stuff, I have a virtual unlimited supply of Martha Stewart napkins and place mats and more than a smattering of high end designer stuff such as Calvin Klein in a broad array of colors and patterns to match any grease, grime or gunk mess.

Over time I've furnished my shop with industrial steel pallet rack shelving, a stainless tray counter about 8' x 3' x 3"deep, two similar sized old restaurant tables with 3" thick maple tops, HID lighting in the shop and over the parking area, last weekend I picked up a huge bench vise probably 80 years old made in Cleveland OH that weighs 100+ lbs, and has jaws 8" wide that open 12" on a swivel base!

But one of, if not the best find wasn't even from the swap shop! When a resident brings their waste to the transfer station household garbage goes into a semi trailer (which eventually goes to a waste incinerator/power plant) recycling has a whole separate section, yard waste is composted, construction waste, and metals are eventually recycled. I was getting rid of something metal and drove to dispose of it onto a 20' tall pile of accumulated metal stuff when I spied an interesting form about 3" high and 6" in diameter which turned to be a small copper bowl. I picked it up and threw it in the truck where it ended up behind the seat for a year or so. Eventually the truck was cleaned and that bowl found its way into the shop where it sat on the bench for a while. A while later someone visiting noticed it and asked about it which instigated a closer examination. It turns out the bowl is an object d'art from the Chicago School of the early 20th century Arts and Craft Movement hand wrought by the renowned copper/silver smith Falick Novik who later worked at Tiffany's in New York, which I've subsequently been offered $800 for.

So whenever my significant other remarks about the value of something I've brought home from the dump, I simply point to what has been come to be referred to as “my $800 MotherF###ing Bowl” from the same dump!

And I did find one Mercedes specific object once a 124 Owners Bible by Stu Ritter!

A true gentleman. You must be German trained in Stuttgart where the top models are built by white-gloved hands covering well-manicured fingernails and cuticles.

If these stick around for long enough I may have to purchase the set. Not purely on utilitarian necessity, but by the cunning and captivating insight that this ad illustrates about the salesman.

.....and I REALLY, REALLY need a matching table setting!

Just LOOK at this table! Not a matching pair in sight.

Why, these textiles aren't even of the same continental cloth!

Help me, BillyBob.

A heavy diet of garlic will make your cold starts a lot easier.
