1979 300SD Aluminum Hood & Trunk Lid

For Sale:

From 1979 W116 300SD

Aluminum Hood and Trunk Lid, NO DENTS or SCRATCHES!

The clear coat is popping off, however. I would like to sell them as a set.

Here are some pictures. I can send as many and as detailed pictures as necessary for serious lookers. I got these for my 1985 MB 300D thinking they would fit, but not so. I will take a second look, however, I doubt it. My desire to shed at least 50 pounds and gain 5 HP did not work out as thought.

Please PM me.

Thanks,

What is the weight difference between the steel hood/trunk and the aluminum versions?

The hood and trunk lid, together weigh slightly over 50 pounds. The lid is 17 1/2 and hood is 35 or so pounds. The steel hood and trunk lid is well over 100 pounds, so you are getting rid of at least 50 pounds. I do not have super accurate scales, but the bathroom scale is good enough. With 50+ pounds lost, that should equal at least 5 HPs, assuming the rule of thumb of 10 pounds of weight = 1 HP is accurate. I am still hoping that it will fit my car since I was surprised to find a hood and trunk lid without had dings, et cet. Does anyone out there know the interchangeability of these parts ???

No, but I can go and get them from the junkyard. I doubt anyone would take them .... but considering my luck at times. I may swing buy and grab them. The parts are different for a W123. So, I am trying to sell them if anyone is interested.... $100 for both plus the buyer is responsible for shipping.

Where are you located? What are the available methods of shipping? Freight only, I would imagine.

These will not fit your application. I may be interested though.

I am located in sunny Columbia, South Carolina. I forgot to add that I would like to sell the grill assembly also. So, total $120.00. I really do not want to part them out. I did double and triple check the parts, and they are dent free, scratch free, and the only issue is the clear coat / paint. They are not even close to a W123 application, so I want to sell them. I want to avoid Ebay as I do not have and do not want paypal. The hood BTW is going for $299.00 on ebay, so I think all 3 pieces is competitively priced.
Shipping. I bet that will cost almost as much as the items, even sending them last class. OR--
I burn WVO, so I would be willing to drive a short distance if the price is right and it's not super far. If I get my A/C fixed, my distance ability is farther, but that is a big "if" in the next 2 weeks. Also, I can go back to the junkyard to get the springs if that is a big deal. As for shipping, the items weigh a little over 50 pounds, but it is the size of the items. I was looking as making a box, that would hold the hood and trunk lid since it is a lot cheaper to ship one bigger box than 2 big boxes. So, not sure how to price getting some plywood and making a box or getting lucky and finding a plywood box big enough. Any thoughts ????

I just sent a front and rear bumper + side skirts from a 126 to TN from NY for $250. The company packaged the items on a pallet and sent to a commercial address.

My point is I would feel confident saying they are too big to go anything other than freight. I might be able to work up a commerical address. I wouldn't worry about building a box for them, just bubble wrap them to death.

If you know of a shop that will give you a freight quote based on weight and measurements I think I would be interested. My zip is 13204.

OH! And, I think the springs are going to be pretty important.

need help with shipping issues

Hey,

I will go to junkyard ASAP to get the springs.

Not sure how to tackle the shipping issues as I have never done this before. Any insight? What are the mechanics ? I called UPS and they told me one bigger box is cheaper than 2 big boxes. Also, the UPS store said they can wrap and box anything (not sure how true that is), and if UPS boxes and wraps it, they are responsible for any damages.

So, having said the above, I will check out the various options to ship it. Once I get some prices, let me know any other details or info. Or, you can PM . Thanks.

UPS Shipping

Howdy,

Here is the info sent to UPS store. They will let me know if it will ship "freight" or otherwise.

I have the hinges, springs, hood, grill, and trunk lid.

"The destination zip is 13204. It's in NY.

I rounded everything up to the inch

The trunk lid is 58" x 33" x 6" (the latter is the deptch of the part). Weighs less than 18 pounds

The hood is 60" x 47" x 4" (" ... ") Weighs less than 35 pounds.

So, actually, one box which was 60" x 48" x 12" would work.

Please let me know."

I should get a response tomorrow.

Thanks,

Mark

Answer by UPS:

"Because of the size of the shipment it has to go UPS Freight the transit timein 3 business days. Using the size box you stated with a value of $300.00 (the insurance cost it $2.00 per hundred after the first $100.00) the shippingcost is $225.52. If we box it for you using UPS packing standards the packingfee is about $137.50. The packing charge is estimate it could be less. Thank you for your interest. Tom Malloy"

I don't know if you have sold this hood yet or not, but I recently got in a wreck and have been looking for this exact color hood for my 300sd. If you haven't gotten rid of it yet, I would be extremely interested.

I still have the hood, springs, grill, et cet. So yes, I still have it.

Where are you located. If you are within 50 miles or so, we can work out something for delivery.

PM me if still interested. Thanks.

Thanks,

Dont over look shipping with your local greyhound bus. I had the entire front of my lesharo shipped that way, cost about 75 bucks...

I crated and shipped the same parts to a friend overseas a year or two ago. Be warned that a UPS store will basically charge a 100% premium (markup) when/where possible.

For a domestic shipment, you are far better off crating it yourself so that it is safe and secure (several 2x3s and plywood) and then dropping the crate off to a shipping location.

Try googling "forward air" first. Then just try "shipping crate truck" with your zip code.
