FS: Somewhat rare, Bundt Rim W123, Spare

For Sale:
Somewhat rare: (SPARE TIRE) Pristine looking rim, Bundt, Aluminum, with original tire made in W. Germany for W123. Tire appears to have never been used. The instructional card was still attached. Attached are some pictures, but I think a better digital camera would do it justice. I think this is best not seperated, e.g., rim sold seperately. Instead, whole tire & rim, with card. $100.00 plus shipping. This is more directed towards the purist or restoration market.

Cool! I remember when they had those tires from the factory. YOu couldn't buy them from a tire store as I remember but they came from the factory with that extra rib on them.

Hey,

What is the deal with that rib ? If you know. The rim itself appears virtualy new. It was the rib that caught my eye. The tire was made in W.Germany. The tire itself looks virtually new? What does the rib do ?

I like those ribs. My guess it that they are curb guards to keep the hubcaps or wheels from getting scraped up by curbs.

Yes, I think that is the purpose. The tires were also rated for more weight than a standard michelin xzx of the same size I believe too.

I wonder how many miles you could drive on that ancient tire before it blows up

From the looks of it, well over 50 miles which is the warranty that US makers put on their brand spankin' new spare tires. How many miles would you bet before it "blows-up?"

I dunno. With the tire living in the trunk it was probably preserved well.

A friend of mine was able to go 100 miles on the original doughnut spare from the trunk of his 85 Jetta before it blew out.

I have run old tires like that before from the trunk. They tend to have the belts shift. It is a novelty for a show car, not a practical spare.

If I were judging a car show you'd better believe I'd give extra points for factory tires!
