Is this just a plug-and-play swap with an 85mph one? If so I want it.

If you plug it in it will work fine - not sure if you will need a corresponding speedo gear - worst case scenario, you can just order that from the dealer for not a lot of money

IM me for my paypal address if you are interested - Thanks!

I was told that the speedos vary greatly over the years of w123 model line and correspond to the differential gearing and transmission number.

Never found any list of speedo part numbers

Model and year that it originally came out of is a key starting point

Does the odometer work on this unit? A huge selling point!

You can fix odometers: How to Repair Your Broken Odometer

I was rummaging through my garage this weekend and found a 100mph speedometer that I pulled (I think) from a 300D...maybe an early NA one? I can't remember if it had a tachometer. I was only aware of 85 and 120's for the diesels. The 85's are just silly, especially on 1980 MY 450SEL's and 6.9's...considering I was cruising at 115 for part of my drive home last night.

Even a late 200D with the 3.92 diff is rated to do 84mph and will exceed that sometimes...good to have an odometer that's a bit high than too low. Turbo 300(S)D's are rated for 103mph. AFAIK the 85mph speedos started in 1980 due to a US DOT regulation, and I'm not sure how long they continued.

Hmm, from a bit of Googling, it appears that this would be a pre-1979 model, because it has a metal wheel center, as opposed to the later black style:

As usual in Mercedes, I prefer the earlier style.

This particular speedo came off an '83 from looking at the part number. Somebody popped off the black center cap and glued on the silver one.

This came out of a 1979 euro model 280 and shows no indication it was ever changed in the way you describe.

This speedo has not been glued-on, nor does it show any evidence of it being modified / tampered with and to assume that would be very forward of you, especially if you are not 100% about what you say.

Yes I'm being forward and Oh I am 100% sure the part number on the face, 123 542 18 57, is from a 1983 300d with a 3.07 ratio differential.

Do a search on that part number and see for yourself.

Now the speedometer could have been recalibrated for a 3.58 ratio differential during the 280's Federalzation or the diff ratio was change to 3.07 to make it correct for the Euro import Federalization. However I see a repair tag, which may suggest it could have been recalibrated to the gear ratio on the car.
