wtb: manual mechanical steering box

MB-1234610601

1976-1986 maybe?

I don't want power steering in my w123 anymore. Please help me get biceps like those guys in Jersey shore.

The guns will not probably flare that much. Once the car starts moving, there is very little difference. Once you hit about 20 mph, no difference. I did notice that my manual steering box is way more responsive in my new car, but I have no idea why.

I think power steering was standard option in 1981 and foward, but good luck finding that box. I looked for a really, really long time and it was only luck and the kindness of Larry Bible which permitted me to get one. Also, DO NOT FORGET that you need the longer lower steering shaft. I have a post somewhere about the lenghts. Also, the rubber boot is different also.

If you ever get sick of w123s let me steal it :-). I read our thread. I figure box first and everything else later. What was your end solution? Did you find the right shaft and boot? I remember seeing part numbers.

Yes, Larry was a prince and mailed me the lower steering shaft and the boot. I strongly suggest you get both because the corrogated tube which makes up the lower steering shaft is unique and something I would not tinker with in trying to make one out of just steel tubing. There is something about that lower steering shaft and safety engineering in case you got into a wreck. It is designed to bend or collaspe or something along those lines. Plus, I was so PO'd when I did the swap and did not have the correct lenght lower steering shaft. It was a lot of work that got completely stalled. If you could, just get the whole deal.

What model car did your come from again? I've read 230s ? I really don't know where to even begin looking. .....its funny how all these parts have a whole list of other parts needed. I was looking into the m pump plan. I need linkage brackets new lines. All that stuff is be better just waiting for a junk yard or someone parting a car out.

It came off a 240 D. Because PS was not standard until 81 (I will have to double check the MB literature), I assume at least in theory any W123 before 81, but I doubt that is accuarate. I would venture a guess that 200, 220, and 240. This would be a nice JY score. I have never seen one in the JY, but then again, I have seen much more valuable and sought after items in the yards ... so, just dumb luck.

I had no idea this option existed for W123's.

I'd like to find such a setup to put into my 1983 200D, since it's very minimal already, but has power steering.

Tell you what, if I find one I'll trade it to you for one of those godawful W123 column shift setups (column, transmission blocking plate, center console trim, instrument cluster part). I like to do my own ridding the world of horrible parts.

What is it with you people wanting the same stupid junk as me? I need an OM617 NA flywheel (not to actually use - heavens no! I'm thinking of making an interesting wall clock, yeah, that's it)...heck, I'm in such a good mood, I'll not only pay shipping, but scrap value too!
