W126 300SD in CT, solid body/eng bad trans

Alright so I had this up in the cars section and I didn't have much action since really its a non-driver (but a runner) due to transmission. So I'm going to post it in the parts section. This is a SOLID SHELL in the very least and a good engine as well.

Its a white 1982 300SD with about 220k on the clock. I had a brown 1982 300SD (180-190k) that rusted out and became unsafe so I swapped the engine and trans into the white shell. White car came from Texas until the previous owner bought it a year prior to me and stripped it for its engine for another diesel shell. The transmission blew last year, I thought it was the B2 piston but it turned out to be the servo/band itself so the trans needs to come out. I wanted to do it last year (I bought a new B2 piston (NOT the band itself) and put it in with the offchance it might work...it didn't) and had it shipped up to Rocky Hill, CT where it is now. This can be made back into a cheap DD for the price of a B2 band (about $100) if you want to do surgery, or plop a good used trans ($90-250) in there and go. My loss is your gain.

Reason for sale: I live 250 miles away from where it is being stored/where I can work on it. I simply don't have the time to run up there, source a trans, fix it, and all that.

GOOD
- Engine with about 200k on it (originally from my brown car). Moderate blowby, but not too bad. I'd like to test the compression if I have the chance but it started down to -6*F with no block heater, which is impressive. So basically the engine is in great shape. Overall I put about 20-25k on it between the two cars and the engine never gave me any issues. Its an OM617.952, 3.0 turbodiesel 5 cyl

- Turbo gives good boost and spools up, no noise. I saw 14-15psi out of it which is spot on spec. Its been sitting for a year so it hasn't spooled up and the seals have leaked a bit of oil over time...so when its started at idle now it gives a bit of blue smoke. As soon as it spools up it should go away.

- Hardly any rust. This is the reason I got the shell, since it came from TX. There seems to be a patch in the passenger side wheelwell but it is solid. The rocker has a couple bubbles on it...comparing to what I usually see with those (crumbling jack points ) its insignificant, repairable and/or has many many years to go before being an issue (can't even see it on the pics).

- Lots and lots of new replaced parts. This was my daily driver for 2 to 3 years. I'll make a list below.

- All new speakers with custom rear deck, CD player w/USB
- Comes with dash cover (perfect shape) which is kind of hard to find

BAD
- Interior is multi-colored at the moment. For some reason the guy I bought it from didn't have a passenger seat. I have a blue driver's seat from a w123 (bolt in, just need to change seatbelt latch over) but I kept the tan leather front seats from my other SD so the fronts matched.

- No AC. I cracked the condenser on the engine swap all the parts are there except the condenser. It worked prior to the swap and held pressure.

- Transmission blown. This is the obvious one. B2 brake band/servo is broken. I have sourced good used transmissions from $90-250 (forum members). I got my engine and trans out in one day, and back in and running in 4 hours the next. Its a simple straightforward procedure but I haven't had the time sadly.

Parts I've replaced:

*note that I don't have receipts for most of this stuff. I can't find my book so please if interested, inspect and buy based on condition of these parts. Yes, I know that is stupid of me *

- 4 AS tires (Pirelli P4) with 15k or so on them
- 4 reman calipers, brake pads all around, new brake hoses, 4 new brake rotors, new wheel bearings
- Motor mounts
- Brand new B2 piston installed in bum transmission
- Filters all around (including both fuel filters, extras would come with), including power steering filter and flush
- Clarion CD/USB/MP3 player
- (cheap) Turbo gauge, works well
- Battery replaced twice, not sure on it now since it only gets started once a week
- LEDs soldered into gauge cluster
- new flex disc & hardware
- Water pump housing
- Thermostat
- Expansion tank cap
- upper and lower rad hoses
- Ignition tumbler

Asking $1000, or best offer. I really don't want to send this car to the crusher.

As I said, my loss is your gain. Buy it for the shell, buy it for the engine, whatever. I'm about 4x this much into it haha

If interested, please PM me. Car is located in 06067

I am located 250 miles away from this car. I cannot take special pictures for anyone but if there is a serious buyer (as in, actually willing to buy and not a tire kicker) I will obviously meet them up in CT to do business and show the car on a weekend. Clear title in hand. This car will go to the crusher in a month or two if there are no bites which is a crying shame for a RUST FREE car in CT!!! I really just want to put a new transmission in it and drive it around a bit before selling, but I really don't have the time working full time and in grad school down in Philadelphia.

What shape was the interior in when you last saw the car? Cracks in the leather? Dash?

Full disclosure: I found some rust in what I think are the rear subframe mounts of my '84 and I am evaluating all the options... I can't do further investigation of the vehicle right now because of snow.

Could I drive the car home (my location) if I drop a new transmission into it? Does it need anything else to be driveable? What are the tires like after having sat?

The dash is cracked but not bad. I actually have a crack-free dash that came out of my old brown car (engine/trans donor). There's also a plastic dash cover which is in great shape. I have a lot of extra interior parts (it was in pieces when I got it) but overall its in good condition. All the windows worked when I parked it, as did the sunroof. All 4 door panels are in very good condition. Wood has cracked veneer like most older MBs.

Leather is pretty worn. It's not ripped or cracked really, just worn thin in a lot of areas. The back seat (blue MB Tex) looks like its never been used. The MB Tex blue front seat that I have is also in excellent condition aside from being a bit saggy

There's nothing else that needs doing to my knowledge--only thing is the battery which is now dead but it jumps with a start, so the transmission would make it a running/driving car again. This was my DD until it popped. However it's been sitting for close to a year, although we've moved it back and forth and started it and stuff I'd highly recommend double checking all the brakes. So in short, yes - but I wouldn't take the gamble personally until you can get some short trips in first to make sure its fine. I'd recommend trailering it just to play it safe.

Tires are still in great shape and have a lot of tread on them (those pictures above are from September and should give you an idea of the tread), we've made sure to keep air in them and roll the car around frequently.

Thanks for the offer! The car is currently with family but they know nothing about it really--I've been trying to get them to take better pictures but no luck yet.

TBO, I would love to take it off your hands, but with the new house, things are kind of tight. Maybe a half now half later plan.
I'm up to 315k and am beginning to keep my eyes open...
Also wondering what you have done with Boxy....
Currently my SD has developed a camber issue on the LR wheel, due to extreme rust in the trailing arm.
In looking here for possible solutions, I saw this and it got me thinking.

Lemme know

Boxy rusted away but its heart lives on in this white car! Some pictures from the swap.

Wait a minute -- so the car has a blue MB-Tex interior! I have a good blue passenger's seat, so I guess I have that covered... are the transmissions that you sourced in the area?

Yep! Here's what happened - I bought the shell (which originally came with a blue interior) from a guy who had the front seats out. Through a miscommunication, he ended up just bringing the drivers' seat when I went to ship out the car. Told him it was fine, so I stashed that single blue seat in my basement and swapped the palomino front seats from my engine donor car. Blue drivers' seat is still in the basement (will go with car), the only thing that is missing from the complete blue interior is the passenger seat--so if you have that, it's a complete interior. The Blue tex seat that came with it is from a w123 - you'll have to swap over the seat belt clip from the w126 but otherwise its a bolt-in. Think I have the blue w126 headrests though.

The transmissions that I have sourced are in PA unfortunately, and were months ago so I'm not sure of their availability. There are a lot of them out there though, both times I've posted feelers I've gotten good responses--and they're pretty cheap.

Is the transmission a 722.305?

Not sure if that is for me or Hogweed - Mine is a 722.3 (believe it is a .303, it is a stock 1982 300SD trans). It has an electronic speedo cable but otherwise a 300D transmission should swap in--because of the electronic speedo you'd have to swap the tail housing. I'm not sure how hard that would be but certainly easier with them on the bench.
