Sorry - this got away from me... No fresh pics or close ups, but these are the ivory hubcaps as I first saw them in August:

Hey Rick!

D'ya have steelies saved from that 240D? If not, would you be interested in trading Bundts for the steelies currently on the car ? I'm looking for steelies for the W126.

Hey there, Jooseppi

Unfortunately, the heavy steelies off the 1979 went with it when I junked the car. But, I would be willing to part with the later style lighter steelies currently on the 1983. I have more than enough bundt cake rims (in total, maybe 3 sets).

The only thing is that the steelies currently on the 1983 still have decent rubber (as I recall - haven't looked at them closely in quite some time). If I part with them, that means I'll need to put fresh rubber on the bundts I already have.

Hadn't thought about pricing. What's your offer for the set, if interested?

My Bundts have two-year-old Pirellis with about 15k and plenty to go!

OK... tempting. I seem to remember there being decent tread on the steelies I have. The age is unknown. They came with the car, which had been sitting inside a garage since about 2007, I think.

How's the condition of the bundts? Any pictures?

I'll try to clean them up and take a few more pictures on Monday.

I'm looking for an idle control cable. Do you have one in good condition?

I THINK I do. Will have to check my parts stash. The only new one I'm seeing online says it's for '77-'81 models. The one I have would be out of my '79 parts car. The new one I'm seeing is $54 plus shipping.

Assuming I have one (will check) - $25 shipped in the US.

No need for more pictures. They look pretty good. Curious as to why you'd want to swap to steelies.

See this Euro 500SE?

Those are hubcaps on steelies, which were available on the W126 in Europe. The hubcaps are fairly easy to get here in the states, (charmalu/Charlie has a set of four that need paint), and I really like them, so I'm looking to switch. I also prefer steelies to alloys in general for durability, price, and ease of repair. This car is supposed to be practical above almost all else, so this furthers that goal.

Imagine that, a top-of-the line Mercedes coming with steelies!

What brand are your tires? How much wear? Are they all-seasons?

Was out in the garage for a few minutes earlier today. The tires have to be better than 50%. I really don't know how to quantify it. Seem to be evenly worn. As I said, I couldn't tell you how old they are, chronologically, but they've been out of the light and haven't been exposed to UV for any significant period of time in years.

All-seasons, I think. Can check brand tomorrow.

All-seasons? That's good. You could stick a penny in there and see how far up the penny the tread goes -- my tires go to the bottom of Lincoln's ear (to the point where he would have his ear pierced, not that he did )

As far as telling the age of a tire, the last four numbers in the DOT number sequence represent the week and the year the tire was built in. This should help:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11

However, I'm not terribly concerned about the age if the tires have been sitting inside, protected from the mean ol' sun.

Oh, and the penny method would be done by stocking the penny in up side down.
