WTB: 617 Injector Pump needed in Minneapolis, MN ASAP

Hi all,

I just bought a 2001 Dakota with a 617 transplanted into it. I got a good deal because the injector pump was out, it came with a newly re-manufactured one, however that was not the case! I had the mechanic install the new pump, he is 100% positive that one was bad too... ugh

Does anyone have a good used or rebuilt pump? I am in Minneapolis but willing to drive to get it if within 100 miles or ship it. I am in need of this quickly as the truck is sitting in the mechanics shop. Dang.

Any help is much appreciated, thank you!

I have an OM617 Injection pump.....it came off a running engine, I could ship it. It is missing the shutoff valve but that can be swapped over from the previous pump. Its pretty rare for these to go bad. Have you posted the symptoms of the engine/bad pump in the diesel forum at all? Is the mechanic you used familiar with working on MB's or MB diesels? An average mechanic without MB experience will usually not know what they are getting into with these cars....especially with engine specific things like the injection pump....

A brand new installed pump will also need the spin on fuel filter fully primed and then still will take a LOT of cranking to get fuel through the system to get going. Probably 3-4 mins worth, in spread out 20-30 second increments. (half hour between to allow starter to cool off)

Hi there, thanks for the reply with advice!

Yes, Jack the mechanic drives MB diesels and has been working on them for years. He said this has been particularly frustrating, he primed the filter like what you said and cranked...nothing. Before I make the final call on ordering the new one tomorrow I'll ask if he did 3-4 mins worth.

This is mostly my fault in buying a mystery truck. I've had 5 MB diesels, never had 1 issue with the IP. This truck is very well put together, conversion was done with care you can tell. He then sold it to his friend and it's the friend I bought it from... When I get the truck back I'll post lots of pics.

Tomorrow I'm likely going to get a rebuilt pump shipped, I got a quote $715 after sending core back. Not that I'm thrilled to pay it, I feel bad for Jack he spent all this time installing a bad pump the PO told me worked! Not sure how he's going to bill me for his time, but I am leaning on not wasting more of his time. If it were in my own garage I'd probably take more time...

I got a very good deal on the truck, provided we can get it running

He may also want to loosen the nuts on a couple injection lines to the injectors while cranking at first to see if any fuel is making it to the injectors.

Agreed, these pumps hardly ever go bad, if it didn't crank....as pawo said, crack the lines and see if fuel is getting to the injectors. May be a glow plug issue, vac issue, wiring issue...

If the shutoff line is hooked up incorrectly it will apply vacuum to the shutoff continuously...and the engine will never start. Might want to check that too.

Thanks for all the tips. I was with him today and we cranked for 5 mins (taking breaks) and couldn't get any fuel to come out. We played with the vac shutoff... IDK we both were stumped and thought it has to be the IP

He knows diesels pretty well so I am trusting his judgment on this. I'll report back early next week when we get the rebuilt IP to see if it all worked out. fingers crossed!

If you are getting no fuel out, this can also be a lift pump the small thing on the side of the injection pump. It is also possible the fuel pressure relief valve, if this is gone/broke it will cause the ip to not pressurize.

I will chime in as well on having two bad pumps being a pretty remote possibility.

Maybe you should open a thread in Diesel Discussion and get wider input/ideas on this.

When you work the primer pump, do you eventually get the squeaking/raspberry sound from the pressure release valve?

Airlocks can be a huge pain to clear sometimes, even after just a fuel filter change.

Thanks guys! I opened a thread in the diesel discussion. The rebuilt pump got the truck started but not working perfectly just yet...
