I've removed several of them - somewhat of a pain. I would think that installing would be way worse. The biggest obstacle is the plugs that come through the back of the hatch for securing the license plate -- the make it hard to maneuver the latch out.

The button on the outside presses the t-bar at the top of the mechanism all the way to the touching point, but somehow that isn't enough to lever the release.
If I stick a screwdriver in from the accessible passenger side, I can lever the middle just a little bit more, and then push the bottom of the hatch from the inside and kind of force it to release. It's very close. I just don't know what needs to be done. A spring or other adjustment?

That is NOT the typical failure mode of rear panel door latches. What usually happens is the pot metal where the interior chrome handle is attached breaks making it impossible to open the rear panel door from the inside. That's why most people replace it. Does your interior handle open the rear panel door?

There are no adjustments for the latch assembly. You could be missing a spring or it could be a lubrication issue.

Send me your phone number if you want a quick conversation about it.
