I'd fill it with five speed trannies if I could find that many. Bumpers are way too bulky. When I sold my 59 Ferrari it was partially disassembled. I shipped the loose parts and spares in the trunk....can't remember if I put stuff in the passenger area too. No problem. That was in 2008 I believe.

Part of our itinerary: Pick up the car in Sheffield. Drive from Sheffield through the Lakes District then north through the Applecross pass and on to Scotland, past Loch Ness to the very top- John O' Groats. Take the "top of the British Isles photo", then back south to Heysham in England where I (we) take the ferry to the Isle of Man. Tour the Isle of Man including ride the TT race course on a motorcycle.

Even one 5 speed kit would be great. Bumpers laying flat on the wagon floor don't take up much room, and everything else can lay on top (all those 5 speed's ).

Rich:

Either a 380 or 420SE/SEL/SEC right hand euro style (no crossover) exhaust manifold.
420 preferred, but a 380 will work.

I'd love to tour the race course on a scooter!

I think you'll be shocked at how much space bumpers will take. Hope I'm wrong!

Being a Diesel guy, I am not too familiar with gasser parts. What does one of those look like?

I've ridden Applecross on a Triumph. It was quite an experience, but not entirely for the faint of heart. Scottish singletrack roads can be quite entertaining as well.

This is a left hand manifold; the right hand is a mirror image of this.

I'd load up on 38# om617 flywheels (6170320001), if you know source a few of them. While heavy, they're compact and would allow many people to complete vibration-free manual conversions (even if only w/ 4 sp from the 240d's).

Sounds like a great adventure with one reservation on parts - as mentioned by others you may not find these easily available or at least, not at good price (especially when they know you're over here to do just that).

Bringing back my S124 required the purchase of a second parts car as too costly otherwise. Individual parts sell for way more than a complete vehicle, for example a second hand untested differential can sell for $485 as opposed to $900 for the whole car.

OM606 cylinder heads are another rarity here, head refurbishes can pay up to $300 on exchange basis - can't remember the exact figures but sent a spare in when mine was refurbished, paid for third of the costs or thereabouts.

Don't even go there when it comes to trim pieces, rear door speaker covers for S124 non existent in UK, only items that ever show up are in the USA.

Rob Parker (Three Pointed Parts) always has a good cross selection, he might be able to accumulate some specific stock parts before you arrive.

Please see my edit of post #19; either a 380 or 420 manifold will work.

Update

After many delays, the trip is back on schedule. Our flight leaves April 20 (this coming Thursday), and we should be in London by noon on Friday. I don't have a full itinerary yet, but we will have 14 days to get the car, do some repairs to it, see many car museums and collections, visit the Porsche factory and Mercedes-Benz museum, and hopefully go to Ireland. We both have friends we would like to visit as well. I may have to purge my Ipad of it's photos, as I am told I will fill it's memory up with the large amount of photos I will be taking. I will have internet access, and will be posting photos along the way. If I start a new thread, I will post the link here.

To spock505 or anyone else over there- I am wondering what items (small) I could bring with me to use as trading stock. I will have one checked bag that may have some room for a few items.
