I actually got one from a guy that said the radios would just need some of the "tubes" that it uses to work. I only have a mild understanding of the tubes and have no idea how much they cost.

Why not contact Eddie or Tom at Becker? They probably have something that is correct, and they'll know what is the proper radio for your model year.
