Good luck finding one. I had to buy three before I found a core that was rebuildable (i.e. not cracked). Rebuilt they are $1100-1300.

I have one I pulled at a junk yard a while back. It looks good but I have just had it sitting in my basement for a few years. Pulled it for a backup but I no longer need it.

I could probably take it to a machine shop to have it checked out.

I could use a standard head if I needed one, if I replaced the self-leveling system with shocks, right?

Yes as far as I know that would work fine. You might be able to uss a combined power steering/sls pump from a w126, but I have never actually seen one so it must require some fabrication.
