WTB TURBO
I have a turbo that is causing my care to burn oil.
I would like to buy a turbo charger for an 87 300D. Does anyone have one? |

I’ve got a turbo I’ll sell you for $200. But yours probably just needs to be rebuilt. The kits don’t cost that much. The one I have likely needs to be rebuilt as well, hence the $200 price tag. I may not be looking in the right places, but I’ve not found an original Garrett T3 from an OM603 for less than $400.

You may also be experiencing excessive blow-by. With the car running, take the oil filler cap off of the valve cover. If the oil jumps out like crazy, you’ve got blow-by issues.

I have second thoughts. I may be blow-by like cdragotta said.
I talked to a few mechanics, and I get a few different ideas on how to determine if it is the engine or the turbo. |

Route the crankcase breather tube into a catch can of some sort and drive it for several days. If you have a bunch of oil in the catch can, it's likely blowby problems. However, if the turbo compressor is still dripping with oil, you can be assured that it's the turbo slobbering oil since the crankcase breather isn't dumping into the intake tube anymore.
The breather tube will always have some oil mist coming out of it, there's a valve built into the valve cover that's supposed to stop it doing that, but at the age of these cars now most of them don't work anymore and it's not a replaceable item.

A turbo rebuild shop will only charge ~$350 to professionally rebuild your turbocharger. Check your yellow pages for who is near you. Here in VA, timsturbos.com is well regarded.
I would not attempt a rebuild yourself, if you screw up any part of it, the turbocharger will fail catastrophically and dump shrapnel into your intake and then the entire engine is trashed.
