Will Be Parting Out '81 300D

I just destroyed the fresh engine in the '81 300D this morning due to runaway caused by a used Injection Pump. You pay your money and take your chances. That's what I did with the pump and the engine paid the ultimate price.

The head is fresh with new valve guides, and should be totally unhurt. The innards of the engine are what has been spoiled from siezure from high RPM. Everything else is in good shape. It has new tires on alloy wheels, but I will probably keep those for the 240D.

Many other parts are up for sale. The air conditioner and all accessories worked well on the car. The starter and alternator are fresh and the PS pump doesn't leak. The steering box is pretty tight.

The car is silver with a midnight blue interior. Seats and door panels are good.

Email me with your needs. I will start stripping probably in a few weeks, but if you need something that is quick and easy to get off, I could start getting it to you next weekend.

Thanks,

What bad luck. What condition is the console wood trim around the gear shift? Power antenna?

The '81 is a non turbo.

I will check the wood trim.

The cruise control was intermittent. When it decided to work it worked perfect for awhile and would then "drop out." I put a sensor on the speedometer to no avail. I would hate to sell any of these parts for fear of sticking someone with an intermittent cruise control.

The power antenna works well.

Have a great day,

Sorry, I was sure that I had replied to your email.

The '81 model does not have the servo type climate control system, this changed to a totally different system in '80 or '81. The starter is available if you are interested. However, there was a subtle difference in the starters around this same time, so I don't think it is correct for your car either.

Have a great day,

Speedo / Tach parts

Larry,
Bad news about that engine. No worse feeling than *killing* a piece of machinery, is there?

I'm looking for a couple of things:
A working donor speedo/odometer that I can cannibalize to return my odometer to the land of the living.

...and,

A tach amp, so that I can hopefully make that needle move as well.

Best regards,
Randy Leo

I'm sorry but the non turbo 300D's did not have a tach.

I would be happy to sell you the speedometer, but you can easily fix yours if you are willing to do without the trip odometer. Just remove the plastic gear that connects the trip odomoeter to the main odometer and the main odometer will begin working again.

If you still want the speedometer, let me know.

Have a great day,

Parts

Larry,

What are you asking for the head? Sorry, really sorry about the runway. Had the same problem once in my VW diesel rabbit on the freeway. Started pulling crankcase oil up into the engine and wouldn't responde to throttle on the freeway. Laid a great smoke screen, too! Of course, as a last resort, I turned off the key, locking up the steering. Thrill, thrill.

Been so long ago that I don't remember how I finally got it under control but didn't burn up on reentry.

Ben

I would take $300 for the head. It has about 15,000 miles since a complete valve job with new guides.

There are two different type prechambers, and I had to change them to match the pistons I used. If I remember correctly, the prechambers are the ones that are cylindrical with an angled cut. The other type have a rounded end. You need to check to see which ones you need to match your pistons.

Have a great day,

Folks,

There is not much interest here except for engine parts. I will be parting out the engine, but I am now considering eventually making a manual trans. 240D out of this car. I have a manual 240D parts car. I can rebuild the engine and make this car into something worth having.

Thanks for all your responses. The head and other engine parts are still for sale.

Have a great day,

still parting it out?

Larry,

Are you still parting out the 300D? Only engine parts?

I have a '83 300D (is your 81 a W123?) that has euro lights on it. I would like to change it back to the US version. I like the round styling of the headlights and headlight doors. Do you have those available?

Frank

Larry, how much would you want for the "chrome" (plastic with chrome paint stuff) cowl air intakes for the interior ventilation.

Also, does it have a 85mph or 120mph speedo?
