WTB: A Pair of 300E Calipers
Looking for a cheap pair of 300E Calipers. Would like some that are ready to go, GOOD used brake pads would be nice.

Hi,
I have a complete set of calipers, rotors, backing plates and pads. Rotors and pads are pretty worn, calipers and backing plates are very good condition. They are from a working vehicle, I just upgrated to 400E setup.

Peter, how do you like the 400E upgrade? I bought all the parts to upgrade mine to E420 brakes front & rear, but haven't installed yet. Just curious how yours turned out. Also, what brake pads did you use?
Thanks! |

Hi Dave,
The result is as expected, stop on a dime! You will probably get better result because you bought the thicker setup, BTW, from what I read on this site, the rear is not a DIY job, what are you going to do? I wil probably do it if you can pull it off yourself and give me some pointer!! Peter

Hi Peter,
The rear can be done as DIY if you just chop off the stock splash shield. TO install the new, larger splash shield requires pulling the rear hub & installing new bearings, which is not a DIY job and is, from what I hear, a massive PITA! Up front they're only 10mm larger, but I'm hoping the 4-piston fixed setup may be a little stronger - not sure. Check out this site for lots more info: http://www.2phast.com/190E/brakes.htm BTW, what pads did you use before & after? I tried Porterfield R4-S pads with my stock brakes and WOW, the power & feel is awesome, but they will still fade after a few 60-0 panic stops (i.e., torture testing, not real-world driving). I was kind of hoping the larger stuff will delay the onset of fade, which it should... |

Hi Dave,
I only put on OEM Pagid pads, may try yours if you say they are much better. I wonder the 22mm rotor wraps easier than the 25mm if I do a lot of 60-0! BTW, did you buy backing plates for the E420 setup? I like to know if they are the same as 400E setup (124 420 27 44 & 124 420 28 44) it would be nice if they are the same, then I might upgrade to E420 setup someday!! Peter

Peter,
The Porterfield pads are awesome but cost ~$225 for a set, front & rear. They need a decent bed-in period as well, particularly with new rotors. The E420 backing plates are the same. Actually, only the 1992 models had the smaller brakes, I think... the 1993-up 400E had the larger stuff IIRC, same as the 1993-up E320. 294x25 instead of 295x22. The rears are the same on 400E and E420, much larger, and vented. More details, with all part numbers and sizes, are here: http://www.meimann.com/docs/mercedes/124_brakes.pdf If you like to stop hard, I assume you may want to turn fast as well? Check out the 124 sway bar spec sheet too: http://www.meimann.com/docs/mercedes/124_swaybars.pdf Best regards, |
