Wanted: 129 Instument Cluster
My 1991 500sl instrument lights flash and the needles jump when the turn signal is activated.
This part is rather expensive at the dealer. OEM #129 540 75 46. It's the older reel-type odometer. Are there other part #s that are compatible? Anyone know a source? |

Cluster is not the problem?
I know someone with the very same problem on a '92 300SL. He replaced the cluster with a brand-new one, and the problem was not corrected. If you have solved your problem, please post here and let us know a fix. We'll do the same if and when we find a solution.

Cluster not the problem
There is a 129 cluster on ebay listing #2440783127. He says he bought a new OEM cluster, and still has the flickering problem. Therefore he is selling his old cluster, with the assumption that it is working. I was going to try to buy a used cluster on ebay until I read about his problem.
I heard from one tech that this problem might be caused by a bad ground, not a bad circuit board in the cluster. The fix was to "hard wire" a new ground from the circuit board to the chassis. However, I was told by local MB dealer my board was bad. If I go the route of taking it to the dealer, since they diagnosed it (for 1 hour labor) I would expect they would warranty the fix. I have been looking for other avenues, since this part is so expensive and there are multiple tales that the new part didn't fix the problem |
